<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Hi guys, I'm here to share my latest sewing project with you, not because its anything spectacular, but because its something I spent a lot of time and energy on an I felt it deserved a bit of lime light. I have been doing a lot of thinking about sustainability lately, and about the fact that fashion is one of the biggest pollutants on the planet today. Sewing of course has its part to play here, so I have been trying more and more to think carefully about what I am sewing to make sure that its something that I will get use out of, and will last a long time.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<br />
So what does that actually mean? Well for me I am taking it to mean having a focus on buying good quality fabrics, using patterns that I know suit my style and trying to make them well so that they stand the test of time. I know I sometimes can't resist a sew on the whim, but I am going to try and do that in a less frivolous way in the future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfY15XkflkOHCxA6zM7p5pzT9wso-S2rD35vMHCI9KUzS42hx9hG8WLKwZvUnEH9hxnBRvsPsTrCmNHUiG4Inm7DtxEzrGvDOQptjYQGDHXaHDJpB3cEfU1nn2ySy8vHGPDUGAxODibvFo/s1600/RDN7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="727" data-original-width="752" height="309" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfY15XkflkOHCxA6zM7p5pzT9wso-S2rD35vMHCI9KUzS42hx9hG8WLKwZvUnEH9hxnBRvsPsTrCmNHUiG4Inm7DtxEzrGvDOQptjYQGDHXaHDJpB3cEfU1nn2ySy8vHGPDUGAxODibvFo/s320/RDN7.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This sew is therefore no exception to this, I came across this fabric on a Minerva Blogger post and instantly fell in love with it. Its a <a href="https://www.minervacrafts.com/shop/fabric/dress-fabrics/srk-15963-67-robert-kaufman-denim-with-colored-motes-dress-fabric-denim-per-metre">Robert Kaufman Denim with coloured motes in it which I bought from Minerva.</a> Now this fabric is NOT cheap, so when I saw it and knew I wanted some I knew I needed to make a little denim mini, something I could hopefully squeeze out of 1 meter. This is where the <a href="https://www.tillyandthebuttons.com/2013/05/the-marielle-skirt.html">Ness skirt from Tilly and the Buttons</a> came in. I have used a lot of Tilly patterns in the past and they have always been great (my favourite dress ever being a Lilou dress from her book Love at first stitch) and this one really peaked my interest because it is a high waisted denim skirt pattern. I have made a denim mini before but it sits on the hip and this is a much less flattering style for my figure so I wanted to give another pattern a try.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Mpmli13iPpbLMo4AAmI2vIMU4u-qtAy8CpM5r3HpoJW5xcJzGiL8mAoEWcjhOzdstax3tk8jbACRO1mCIkFlQ9d7SDaJz8Eg8OjjS6NlQFwNNjKRxwx3bpU4zuy9H_n3YTyFsUgCm8dp/s1600/rdn5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1600" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Mpmli13iPpbLMo4AAmI2vIMU4u-qtAy8CpM5r3HpoJW5xcJzGiL8mAoEWcjhOzdstax3tk8jbACRO1mCIkFlQ9d7SDaJz8Eg8OjjS6NlQFwNNjKRxwx3bpU4zuy9H_n3YTyFsUgCm8dp/s640/rdn5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I took my measurements and as expected my waist is one size smaller than my hips so I graded the pattern between these two points. I wanted to sew a test version before cutting into the really expensive denim so this is what I did and thankfully the fit is spot on so I cracked on. The only real issue I have is that the zip is a little on the short side, and because I have a small waist and large hips I do have to do that denim hip wiggle to get it on over my hips and I am a bit worried I am going to bust the zip one day. The pattern instructions themselves, as per all Tilly patterns was absolutely faultless. They are really consise with good images. It wasn't the easiest sew in the world as I had not done a proper fly zip before but the instructions helped me through this process seamlessly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3wWkUW04f987mNTo75XDLueZdSM8tMSkRlAweL4k1fnbO1md9vcdvEAvWk5tQLmhYWq4B9MrdojcjX3ZmwogYOurIYZiEFRBcyLeeqyeqMySRJVquNGzGWwZ0gaFM5UiSx3yrM9qa1i7t/s1600/rdn6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1600" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3wWkUW04f987mNTo75XDLueZdSM8tMSkRlAweL4k1fnbO1md9vcdvEAvWk5tQLmhYWq4B9MrdojcjX3ZmwogYOurIYZiEFRBcyLeeqyeqMySRJVquNGzGWwZ0gaFM5UiSx3yrM9qa1i7t/s640/rdn6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The big feature on this skirt though is the rainbow topstitching. I have had lots of really lovely comments about this on instagram so I am really pleased that everyone else is seeing the logic behind this. I hoped that it would really help to bring out the colours in this amazing denim and complement them and it worked so well, it absolutely was the right decision. The thread was from my mum as a stocking filler last christmas and I think its an ebay china special but its worked a treat here. Doing all that topstitching in such a bold thread wasn't easy though, I had to be painstakingly methodical and slow with it but it was worth every minute.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Pattern: </b><a href="https://www.tillyandthebuttons.com/2013/05/the-marielle-skirt.html">Ness skirt from Tilly and the Buttons</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Fit: </b>Size 2 in the waist graded to a 3 in the hip and to the hem</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Difficulty:</b> Intermediate, due to the more complex zip insertion, but the instructions make this a doddle</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Make again?:</b> Definitely, I want to make a friend a version like my tester and I would love to try the longer version, maybe in a grey glitter denim? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaulOsCc1k0iGViJWtu1TG168IU_8CBUF5CuFzHwiC00D96SOno_ZAdbRMDvCwwwGUEm1_VCr-X8A3i1Mh-wPQqYr-w0ccKFp0vEiO-kdpcfPSLgeaSr3OcXH_sZwg84IovsvSQVJq8QPB/s1600/rdn2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1600" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaulOsCc1k0iGViJWtu1TG168IU_8CBUF5CuFzHwiC00D96SOno_ZAdbRMDvCwwwGUEm1_VCr-X8A3i1Mh-wPQqYr-w0ccKFp0vEiO-kdpcfPSLgeaSr3OcXH_sZwg84IovsvSQVJq8QPB/s640/rdn2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Finally I can't finish this post without showing off this cute little guy that I popped on my back pocket. This adorable little patch came from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/OHNORachio">Oh No Rachio</a> and as if this make needed anymore brightening up he is just the ticket. Anyone who knows me is not surprised by this detail, hes so cute!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So anyway, I guess you could call this slow fashion, given that I really took my time over it, used quality fabric, and a quality pattern which fit me well. I hope it is something I will get a lot of wear out of, as I think this and my tester are probably my new wardrobe favourites, </div>

<img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1280" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRFd4HxU2mu4PSGJWcbraNqQjEaxjBfHqyZXjh1cUeeHcZH_2kzWKzyUo4mK1a-MkXfE9Jc1CSyJ_8XinbxtuLzbn_K3u379GoCOU_hb2y4XJqN_Pig9TVOK473fzuGf_WBb4TIy8goSP-/s640/HF1.jpg" width="512" /></div>
<br />
This skirt appeals to all of my whimsy and flights of fancy, it is completely impractical for day to day wear and totally obnoxious, but that's kind of why I love it. I also thing it looks amazing glammed up with a leather jacket and pair of boots.<br />
<div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
I hadn't planned to make this skirt but I was scrolling facebook and saw a post on the <a href="https://rebecca-page.com/product/ladies-tulle-skirt/">Rebecca Page </a>facebook site asking for people to volunteer to test the <a href="https://rebecca-page.com/product/ladies-tulle-skirt/">pattern</a>. I had a roll of tulle thats been sat in my wardrobe since my sister made my wedding skirt and I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to make that into something, wearable, so I signed up. I was very happy to be selected and thus began my first experience of pattern testing. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI9REA4-FmjohQmlciyj_kBxh8ZGZIu6hX-LpuCNNOJI5BOASWt0dac_FnYxf8rCJ790_RQNDZdzUZJFS5Rgf8gxFH1ON2IG0IC3AQiugSEWjvooGsk6whF-22AofAy5kCo1CxWrRPhs6P/s1600/HF3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI9REA4-FmjohQmlciyj_kBxh8ZGZIu6hX-LpuCNNOJI5BOASWt0dac_FnYxf8rCJ790_RQNDZdzUZJFS5Rgf8gxFH1ON2IG0IC3AQiugSEWjvooGsk6whF-22AofAy5kCo1CxWrRPhs6P/s640/HF3.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In terms of the testing I actually found this a little stressful. The timescales were a little shorter than I had in my head imagined and at a time where I had a lot going on at work, and a 2 year old's birthday party to sort. I managed it though. I really enjoyed being part of the testing group and sharing that experience with people, seeing all the different ways people interpret the same pattern was really eyeopening to me and it was nice to ask questions and help others as we went along. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The <a href="https://rebecca-page.com/product/ladies-tulle-skirt/">pattern</a> itself was great, very easy to follow and with pictures to go along with it. This was actually my first Rebecca Page pattern and it was very similar in layout to most of the other small independent pattern producers I have tried. The final result came out just as expected first time and I didn't have any issues with the instructions (bar a few typos etc, which is what we were there to eliminate). It was a little lengthier than some sews due to gathering all the layers of tulle, but in itself that wasn't difficult. I took 2" off for my height but otherwise it was spot on, though you are only fitting the waistband.The only thing I would change is to make sure I used a more solid base for the lining. The poly was quiet sheer itself and the tulle did nothing to stop that. I just need to think about purchasing some undergarments that I can wear with it instead and its perfectly wearable. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEyO2ECxoBKNGd5vg3a8haM4fdrn_SBNV_0JKIacqlBYL1L2qdVxkJHCdgXpefX-zDAHUHNtyAgFNtCrNicXDJDdBJJELT-jASuTirshaFnUpDB49dJOBEu0lDXmS27NgKurQIxglPJe9r/s1600/HF8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEyO2ECxoBKNGd5vg3a8haM4fdrn_SBNV_0JKIacqlBYL1L2qdVxkJHCdgXpefX-zDAHUHNtyAgFNtCrNicXDJDdBJJELT-jASuTirshaFnUpDB49dJOBEu0lDXmS27NgKurQIxglPJe9r/s640/HF8.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Pattern: </b><a href="https://rebecca-page.com/product/ladies-tulle-skirt/">Tulle Skirt by Rebecca Page</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Fabric</b>: Poly lining for the lining and 3 layers of bridal tulle (left over from my wedding), cotton chambray for the waistband</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Extras:</b> a 9' invisible zip</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Version:</b> The fuller 3 layer skirt</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Modifications:</b> I took 2" off for my height</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Fit: </b>Size XS - fit was good, but you only need to fit the waistband</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Difficulty:</b> Intermediate due to the tulle gathering and needing to insert and invisible zip into layers of tulle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Make again?:</b> Probably. Some of the pattern testers made a mock up using chiffon or lace and I love the idea of using this pattern in this way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq7qeFtMvjepaX5rgty7dxutGmLwVyW0qCljCC88notr2a5XvGNw_1m_93_zKU8RuqXVkJasVpcoCthRJ8OqAzfZVcRCCqZWLbHzYxs8vRDAjVn_LJqxClyH7Bo80z20AAShSvPG-UvmcQ/s1600/HF10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq7qeFtMvjepaX5rgty7dxutGmLwVyW0qCljCC88notr2a5XvGNw_1m_93_zKU8RuqXVkJasVpcoCthRJ8OqAzfZVcRCCqZWLbHzYxs8vRDAjVn_LJqxClyH7Bo80z20AAShSvPG-UvmcQ/s640/HF10.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So in all I really enjoyed the experience of testing this skirt, and its amazing that I have this incredible skirt to show for it. I also got the pattern for free as payment for the testing work I did. I would definitely look at doing pattern testing in the future for the right project but with such a hectic life its definitely worth making sure you can stick to the timeframes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So the only thing left to do is work out where I am going to wear this thing? If you had a baby pink tulle skirt where would you wear it? </div>

<br />
Does anyone else out there love nothing more than getting home and throwing on a pair of PJs? I know I can't be the only one, and just how adorable are these, they bring me pure joy. Mr Fox does keep calling me <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/something-special">Mrs Tumble</a> when I wear them though!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjegPU3pL4_zrs2pqRNvfL0-YufDkd7hn2qZf4tekPkTKx_VAx_6byRNyWmO331fVJneKAXI7nZtFB1t8SsiwLroEnEz7CWQpJJ4vmhFhg8tiFgcUlwQaRb0Sm1UUp9oJsFcV4zIT7VTevq/s1600/image3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjegPU3pL4_zrs2pqRNvfL0-YufDkd7hn2qZf4tekPkTKx_VAx_6byRNyWmO331fVJneKAXI7nZtFB1t8SsiwLroEnEz7CWQpJJ4vmhFhg8tiFgcUlwQaRb0Sm1UUp9oJsFcV4zIT7VTevq/s640/image3.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Since having kids PJs feature quiet heavily in my life. The amount of times I am up and down in the middle of the night or up at 5.30am are countless, and quiet frankly who can contemplate getting dressed at that time in the morning? Not me for sure. Pajamas are just the perfect solution to lazy mum mornings, but if you are going to laze about in your nightwear you want to feel pretty special doing so am I right? Well these <a href="https://store.closetcasepatterns.com/products/carolyn-pajama-sewing-pattern">Carolyn PJs from Closet Case Patterns</a> are just the perfect solution to that. I have used this pattern before but the pajamas I made were so loved they now sadly have a large hole in them so it was time to make myself a new set.<br />

There are a number of variations included in the pattern; summer or winter and piped or non piped. On both occasions I have made winter piped flannel versions. The pattern itself is lovely an straightforward with very clear instructions but the one thing I would say before tackling this, or a similar pattern, is to allow yourself time. Firstly you have to remember you are making 2 garments here, top and bottoms, so its not a quick sew, and secondly if you are adding piping there are a lot of fiddly extra steps. I have to admit I have felt a bit lost and had a lack of love for this make most of the way through but once you get to the finished article they look so stunning it is totally worth all the effort. I also absolutely love the shape and fit of this pattern its a very flattering cut which is so important, even for pajamas.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuCAh3gF7j6JCwLku5usFFMYtUYj5ab9SuQbkH2FZijwlKwDp0X_gloZj8cFCxIVAnsMnxV8NZCwKMdQNt-r3xdXLGsjBLm6pzLkpIgE6k3X0tlKaKUgWwVJvagYrVLZIT42ARdezTxylc/s1600/image2+%25281%2529.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuCAh3gF7j6JCwLku5usFFMYtUYj5ab9SuQbkH2FZijwlKwDp0X_gloZj8cFCxIVAnsMnxV8NZCwKMdQNt-r3xdXLGsjBLm6pzLkpIgE6k3X0tlKaKUgWwVJvagYrVLZIT42ARdezTxylc/s640/image2+%25281%2529.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>

The fabric is just gorgeous, its so bright and cheery. Its a <a href="https://www.croftmill.co.uk/products/cotton-fabrics/brushed-cotton-flannel-fabric-products.html">wynciette fabric from Croft Mill</a> and as I write this they still have it in stock. I love the colours of this fabric so much, it is a sort of off white/ivory colour but its not too far off. The only issue I have with this fabric and a similar one I bought for my last PJs was that the stripes of hearts don't run 100% horizontal which basically made pattern matching impossible. I really wanted to match them as much as possible but I just had to give up in the end. I don't think I did too bad a job really, except for the pocket which is a bit off.<br />
<br />
I also absolutely love the buttons. I was having a bit of a drama with the buttons because the ones I bought were a different shade to the piping. Instead I went to my trusty button stash and found these rainbow heart buttons and I absolutely think they finish the outfit perfectly.<br />

<br />
So will I get lots of wear from them? Yep, I will pretty much live in them<br />
Will I make them again? Definitely (though I won't necessarily enjoy the process)<br />
Would I recommend the pattern? Yes<br />
I don't think I could ever go back to shop bought PJs now, and I definitely need a summer pair despite all the effort.<br />
<br />
I hope you love these as much as I do and they bring a little bit of sunshine to your day.<br />
<br />
Have you ever made your own PJs? Which pattern did you use and how did you find the process? I'm interested to find out if others have found it as laborious as I did.<br />

I'm back and with even more sparkles for you! I am so obsessed with sewing sparkly clothes right now and this post is no exception. As a bit of a break from the rather crazy rainbow I have been showing you lately we we are well and truly back to black for this one; where I am going to share with you not one but two new skirts I have sewn up.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The first of which is this incredible glittery pencil skirt. The picture above is a little blurry but it works really well in showing how this fabric catches the light as opposed to the first image. The fabric is some rainbow glitter spot velvet jersey (there's a lot going on there I know!). Its a medium weight jersey with a velvet texture, then it has tiny little spots of rainbow glitter glued on all over. It catches the light so brilliantly and the sparkles really move with you. I saw it in Derby market and I just couldn't resist the sparkles and its been sitting in my stash for a few months. I added this to my #makenine2019 challenge on Instagram which I set up to put some of my stash fabric to good use.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The pattern is the knit pencil skirt from the book <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gertie-Sews-Vintage-Casual-Sportswear/dp/1617690740">Gertie Sews Vintage Casual</a>. I cut out and stitched the skirt in my size. I went by hip size as you make the waistband with elastic by fitting that to your waist so I knew that size would be easily fixed at that point. The fit is pretty good but I did take another inch out of the side seems towards the bottom and graded that up to the hips. I did this after trying the skirt on. I think this is personal preference in that I prefer my skirts to hug my knees but it was a very easy modification to make. This skirt is a really simple construction and definitely good for a beginner or those wanting to start with knits, I made both these skirts in under an hour. The instructions are good, but its hard to get them wrong really with something as straightforward as this.<br />
<br />

<br />
The second version of this skirt I made using some old gold spot ponte roma fabric which I purchased from Fabric Godmother a couple of years ago. I had previously made a maternity skirt out of this fabric, which I then hacked after my pregnancies to turn in to a normal skirt. It has been worn and washed so many times that the little metal gold spots are completely worn down and no longer sparkle. I loved that skirt so much that I was so happy to discover I could squeeze a version of this skirt out of the remaining fabric I had and so I have remade something which I know I will get so much wear out of. Its amazing to see the difference and how worn and bobbly my old version has gotten!<br />
<br />
<b>Pattern:</b> <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gertie-Sews-Vintage-Casual-Sportswear/dp/1617690740">Gertie Sews Vintage Casual Easy Knit Pencil Skirt</a><br />
<b>Fabric:</b> Glitter velvet jersey from the market and gold spot ponte roma from Fabric Godmother (not linked as no longer available)<br />
<b>Extras:</b> Some 1.5 inch elastic for the waistband<br />
<b>Version:</b> Pencil skirt<br />
<b>Modifications: </b>Took approx 1 inch from the side seems at the bottom and graded to the hip. I think I will take a few inches off the length of the ponte roma version to get it sitting more at knee length for me.<br />
<b>Fit:</b> Cut a size 4 due to hips. Fit is fine as elastic for waist was cut to comfortable fit.<br />
<b>Difficulty: </b>Very easy. Excellent for a beginner wanting to sew with knits. Can be done on regular machine or overlocker.<br />
<b>Make again: </b>Definitely, Knit pencil skirts have sort of become my style so this will definitely be a wardrobe staple.<br />

I'm not going to lie this fabric purchase was a bit of a whim while watching strictly come dancing last year, and I'm not even sorry! I'd love to make more 'everyday' wear inspired by strictly, lets face it their costumes are amazing. I'm not sure this counts as everyday wear, I have no idea how I am going to wash it, but at least I actually managed to wear it out the house.<br />
<br />
Have you ever sewn anything that was inspired by the show, or any spectacular dancewear outfits? I absolutely want to know about them!<br />
<br />
Thank you for reading and keep dancing.....!<br />

It doesn't get much brighter than this does it! Its making things like this that genuinely just bring joy to my life and show me why I love to sew. This gorgeous little dress was on my make nine this year, and so in keeping with Children's week on The Great British Sewing Bee it was the perfect time to sew it up. Its also been an amazingly sunny week here in the UK for Feb so what better time to add even more sunshine to your day. Read on for more gorgeous pics of this dress, pattern details and a list of current rainbow jersey stockists... </div>

The pattern is the '<a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/168349415/dotty-girl-baby-girl-dress-sewing">Dotty' dress by Puperita</a>. If you have read my blogs before you will already know I am a massive fan of Puperita patterns for childrenswear and this pattern is no exception. The dress comes with 2 sleeve lengths so it perfect for winter and summer and is just the easiest thing to sew. Definitely a good one for anyone trying to master sewing with Jersey to make children's clothes. The pattern has clear written and visual instructions and gives you tips on how to sew using either overlocker or machine. Even the neckline is easy to sew.<br />

I used all three of my machines to stitch this dress; overlocker for my seams, regular machine for the skirt gathers and coverstitch for the hems and binding. It's definitely overkill for this kind of sew but I just love the professional finish that I can achieve with the coverstitch, it just gives me the happies. Just look at those stitches (insert drooling emoji here).<br />

I always get a lot of comments when I put pics of a rainbow jersey on instagram about where I purchased it from. The truth is that I tend to snap up a meter of the stuff whenever I see it cross my path (this evening has been no exception!) and so this version has been in my stash for well over a year and is sadly no longer available, but was originally from <a href="https://caboodletextiles.co.uk/">Caboodle Textiles</a>.<br />
<br />
But fear not, I wouldn't want to let you down; what I have done is do a bit of searching for you and below is a few sites which are currently stocking rainbow jersey:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.lillyandmimi.com/search?type=product&q=rainbow+stripe">Lilli and Mimi</a> have some lovely stripes, I especially like the one that's on sale<br />
<a href="https://caboodletextiles.co.uk/?s=rainbow+stripe&post_type=product&categories=1&attributes=1&tags=1&sku=1&ixwps=1">Caboodle textiles</a> also have some other rainbow stripes in stock<br />
I found this from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/585476956/thick-rainbow-stripes-jersey?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=rainbow+stripe+jersey&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&organic_search_click=1">Jazzy Jersey UK on Etsy</a> though looks like it might be ribbed?<br />
This is a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/624201564/rainbow-yarn-dyed-stripe-2cm-jersey?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=rainbow+stripe+jersey&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1">gorgeous non pink rainbow</a>, would be gorgeous for boys, or girls that are less into pink<br />
And if you are really desperate you could also try buying from <a href="https://www.lilofant.se/en/fabric/patterned/">Lilofant </a>direct in Sweden. I have never tried so am not sure on shipping and times etc, but have never had issues buying from the EU before.<br />

<br /></div>
Hi there, I hope everyone had a lovely weekend, did anyone get up to any sewing? Have you heard the amazing news that Sewing Bee is back on British TV on Feb 12th? That's less than 3 weeks away, I couldn't be more excited! But anyway that't not why I am here, I am here to tell you all about this <a href="https://www.stylearc.com/shop/sewing-patterns/nina-cardigan/">StyleArc Nina cardigan</a> which is my most recent make and a big tick for the first project in my #makenine2019 list. If your not sure what this is head over to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thediyfox/?hl=en">instagram</a> and have a little goosey.<br />
<br />
Its the first time I have ever made a cardigan so its nice to add a new skill to my repertoire, and this fabric has been in my stash for at least 12 months so I am happy to finally give it a lease of life. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this make and I will go into more details about that below.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Ofw-8cFvTQO2ahllMNr-wuZHDC4pydz0zv0pDYoqG_Bk81_yvFYaz9Sw3lazlrY1M6Ge1ExGfmJ4vjpC_Ta19Dt505e4MeR1N5Gwi-Zi_dENudrN4wTdP744RzwRMN43tgzEVneuvR17/s1600/NINA-CARDI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="369" data-original-width="709" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Ofw-8cFvTQO2ahllMNr-wuZHDC4pydz0zv0pDYoqG_Bk81_yvFYaz9Sw3lazlrY1M6Ge1ExGfmJ4vjpC_Ta19Dt505e4MeR1N5Gwi-Zi_dENudrN4wTdP744RzwRMN43tgzEVneuvR17/s400/NINA-CARDI.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
first off lets talk a bit about the pattern. This is a large part of why I really hated this make due to the instructions in the pattern being the vaguest I have ever seen. I've never used a StyleArc pattern before and I am not sure how convinced I am to try another. All you get is a bullet point list of instructions, and probably 50% of these were just how to print and assemble the pattern, helpful I suppose if this is your first PDF download. There were a couple of illustrations but I don't really feel like they added to the process and they didn't obviously tie in to which part of the instructions they referred to. I have mentioned before how I am much more of a visual sewer, so I really like my patterns to have some sort of diagram or image to help me along. Having said all that it really wasn't complicated to sew up. I did however use terms that might not be familiar to a novice and didn't give any suggestions on how to go about the sew without using an overlocker. Because of this I would be cautious in recommending one of their patterns to a beginner sewer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That being said I chose this pattern because of the shape. There are other draped/waterfall cardigan patterns out there but none I have seen that include the fitted waist at the back, something which I was really drawn to given my figure. As well as that the way the cardigan is constructed, essentially a set of carefully placed rectangles, is very clever and the final look of this cardigan I am really impressed with as it hangs beautifully. This has helped to significantly redeem the pattern in my eyes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJLWy117v8YSD2sO1E3WQB2vZdp5qmyqJHYGBfge9TJYRJ_DKjETXlrl16z_bAVy0_zwZmMb5UPJuomAbgcWGkogqUWfGHNPUo9ArgMWMT0OpvpegJxZdCiuOkxVABjwOC1Qg2IKhrk4X4/s1600/leopard+nina+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJLWy117v8YSD2sO1E3WQB2vZdp5qmyqJHYGBfge9TJYRJ_DKjETXlrl16z_bAVy0_zwZmMb5UPJuomAbgcWGkogqUWfGHNPUo9ArgMWMT0OpvpegJxZdCiuOkxVABjwOC1Qg2IKhrk4X4/s640/leopard+nina+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fabric is from <a href="https://www.minervacrafts.com/">Minerva crafts</a>, I bought it over a year ago and there was only 2m left so I just snapped it up. I loved the colours and anyone who knows me knows I am a sucker for any kind of leopard print and this oversized print really struck me. I had imagined I would make a dress out of it but when it arrived its a very thin jersey and the stretch recovery isn't that great so as a result I just tossed it in my stash hoping that one day I would find something to make from it. I am absolutely over the moon I choose this pattern for this fabric, it suits it really well and I can see me wearing it often paired with a pair of black trousers (hello to having something to wear with this amazing faux leather pair!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see from the picture below this fabric is only printed on the outer side so because of the way the draping falls there is a bit of the inside showing through which isn't ideal, but this is just something I will bear in mind the next time I use this pattern, it certainly wont put me off wearing this one at all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmZJARuBCvrm29TlJkc5pHO7CH41uIPlruBxcajVhnx7uY2Ofz-__tkWGMT_v0W_9Eq5DTAVr2gvPppMC5IUClOAjrbiAYkI1tSoX2bfcGcEdlCrRQ2_TJsdQSEPZD0XyoK4SQ35q_9H_j/s1600/leopard+nina+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmZJARuBCvrm29TlJkc5pHO7CH41uIPlruBxcajVhnx7uY2Ofz-__tkWGMT_v0W_9Eq5DTAVr2gvPppMC5IUClOAjrbiAYkI1tSoX2bfcGcEdlCrRQ2_TJsdQSEPZD0XyoK4SQ35q_9H_j/s640/leopard+nina+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So in summery; the pattern annoyed me and the fabric wasn't very nice to sew with so I ended up just whipping this together just to get it out the way really and I felt no joy from it. That feeling was however completely reversed when I tried it on and actually saw how this clever little pattern comes together to make a really gorgeous cardigan and now I really really like it. I will definitely be revisiting this pattern. I have ideas about using some lovely quality moda jersey to make a really luxurious version or perhaps some black stretch lace of some description which would really tick my goth boxes! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Pattern: </b><a href="https://www.stylearc.com/shop/sewing-patterns/nina-cardigan/">Nina cardigan by StyleArc</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Fabric</b>: Oversized leopard knit from <a href="https://www.minervacrafts.com/">Minerva Crafts</a> (no longer available)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Extras:</b> Some Elastic for shoulder seams (though I used ribbon)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Version:</b> Only one version included</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Modifications:</b> I used my coverstitch for the hems instead of babylocking</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Fit: </b>Size 8 (you buy this pattern in 1 size only but get the 2 corresponding included), the fit was spot on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Difficulty:</b> Intermediate, the construction is actually pretty simple but because the instructions aren't clear I don't think it would be so easy for a beginner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Make again?:</b> Despite the vague instructions I will definitely make this again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am pleased to have made some headway already in my #makenine2019, I decided this year that everything in the list was going to be using something from my stash, and using a pattern I already own but haven't necessarily made yet. I am actually really pleased to have this focus and hopefully give some of those long forgotten fabrics a bit of love.<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have you made a make nine pledge? Give me an insta link I would love to take a look at your plans for the year.</div>

I don't normally take photos in full sun, they don't do anyone any favours but looks at that sparkle!<br />
<br />
Towards the back end of last year I did some serious skirt pattern testing/altering in a hope to find a perfect fitting skirt pattern that ticked all the right boxes for me. I wanted something fitted with a high waist and a zip fastening which I could use on this amazing metalllic fabric. I ended up making 3 skirts in the end before I finally decided on the perfect fit and then ended up making a <a href="https://www.thediyfox.co.uk/2018/10/metallic-shorts.html">pair of shorts </a>instead! Luckily for me though it turns out I actually had enough fabric to make both the shorts and the skirt and so here it finally is, the culmination of all that effort, and I am pleased to say it was definitely worth it.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know I have done this before, but before I move on can we please just talk (again) about this fabric! Seriously, its the most incredible metallic woven linen from Robert Kaufman. Its nearly impossible to photograph well, but in person the metallic threads glisten in the light, but in the most delicate way. There are so many colourways of this, and I would love to find some other patterns to try a different one, but for me it had to be this pink rainbow, its just divine, and it just suits my personality perfectly!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKq9xbyNEm0nG3zhzDcVR607B5N1w5uKaRzc9Ygx7fdiEoC9WPLXg_rWGJy6_xCC_T2j1pxmKRGsQbTRhAS0CQuufdyfId2pr57UF1YqiBhll7vbxqaRtX4HtSOZdfutkeM1E0qIcJxH0k/s1600/3+skirts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="633" data-original-width="1600" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKq9xbyNEm0nG3zhzDcVR607B5N1w5uKaRzc9Ygx7fdiEoC9WPLXg_rWGJy6_xCC_T2j1pxmKRGsQbTRhAS0CQuufdyfId2pr57UF1YqiBhll7vbxqaRtX4HtSOZdfutkeM1E0qIcJxH0k/s640/3+skirts.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are the skirts I mocked before settling on this pattern. I started off with the <a href="https://sewoverit.co.uk/product/ultimate-pencil-skirt-sewing-pattern/">Ultimate Pencil Skirt</a> from Sew Over It (centre), as I wear a lot of skirts in this style. I am a massive fan of this skirt, and it gets a lot a wear in my work rotation. I made it up in some stretch sateen which is very forgiving, the metallic linen however has none of that stretch and I think would have been a bit more awkward to wear such a fitted skirt in this fabric. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next step I took was to shorten the Ultimate Pencil skirt quiet considerably and straighten the side seams from the hip to the hem (left). I also added an exposed zipper which is something I have never done before so was a bit of a learning curve. Again, I love this skirt I think more than the original and the fit is a lot better for a non stretch fabric. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I then wanted to try something which had a proper waistband to see if I got a nicer fit and so made a version of Simplicity 1370 in stretch denim (right), again with an exposed zip hack. This denim mini is a great wardrobe staple, and I have it on right now, but for my shape the waist isn't quiet in the right place. It wants to sit just above my hip bones, but as that's where my body curves in quiet considerably it just wants to ride up and sit on my natural waist so it can look little awkward and results in me forever pulling it down. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzZoJnYn1B_O0ox0_lui8Dxjm5T-ByVKLcK0HGxet09j2uxT1Jm0MUkN469ST6YQg1qxj4RCMheqfHtsbDpyQV5gCa7P2hRr73CT0CHPgEotOvvMpkgQMkNAY_9MkQpzw-ERQdqz4ki2W1/s1600/DSCF5302.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1386" data-original-width="1450" height="610" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzZoJnYn1B_O0ox0_lui8Dxjm5T-ByVKLcK0HGxet09j2uxT1Jm0MUkN469ST6YQg1qxj4RCMheqfHtsbDpyQV5gCa7P2hRr73CT0CHPgEotOvvMpkgQMkNAY_9MkQpzw-ERQdqz4ki2W1/s640/DSCF5302.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So where did I end up? Well The final pattern is somewhat removed from the original, but it is basically a hacked version of the Ultimate Pencil Skirt pattern. The full list of alterations I made to this pattern are as follows:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Shortened the length a lot, I originally took it to the top of the kick pleat then sewed the hem on fitting. </li>
<li>Straightened the side seams from the hip for a less fitted shape</li>
<li>Using the waist facing pieces I added a 5/8 seam allowance to top and bottom and cut twice as many pieces to create a waistband. I then folded over the top of the skirt pattern pieces to where the facing stopped at the top but added 5/8 again to the top to fit the waistband on. I sewed the waistband basically using the instructions in Tilly and the Buttons Love at First Stitch, but there will be plenty of tutorials online.</li>
<li>Added an exposed zipper. </li>
</ul>
<div>
I am absolutely over the moon with the fit of this skirt and how it has all come together. Its the perfect skirt for me and I am so pleased that I did get the chance to make it up and test it properly. This will definitely be a go to skirt pattern for me in the future. The fact I managed to squeeze a pair of shorts and a skirt out of this amazing fabric is just an incredible bonus. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSPCT70m0mSq5MeS0ikV9nJua7JXcawdggsrHMeDQ5sHRdl509L17ZlPXAy8m0mq9zgj9-TbsYY9iIwSEzpj-40EerWESX3cwUg23oDfvIG3IiAcAMbpARec_663bvfbyFffojKoZBTwSJ/s1600/DSCF5314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1374" data-original-width="1600" height="548" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSPCT70m0mSq5MeS0ikV9nJua7JXcawdggsrHMeDQ5sHRdl509L17ZlPXAy8m0mq9zgj9-TbsYY9iIwSEzpj-40EerWESX3cwUg23oDfvIG3IiAcAMbpARec_663bvfbyFffojKoZBTwSJ/s640/DSCF5314.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do you like to hack patterns yourself? Do you have any great success stories? For me I am not a huge fan of the fitting process, but I love how modifying or mashing together patterns can create a new and unique look, and extend the use of patterns you own. I would love to hear which are your favourite patterns to hack. </div>

The thing I really love about sewing is that you can turn your ideas into a reality, whether that be a design that pops into your head or an outfit you have seen else ware and want to recreate. Not only can you create the look you aspired to yourself, but also it is truly made to measure and to suit your own style.</div>

<a name='more'></a>I recently saw an image of these amazing <a href="https://uk.calzedonia.com/thumbnail/women/leggings/leather-effect-leggings/pc/50118/c/50182/50184.uts">trousers</a> (they are fleece lined come on!) with a star print kimono. I really liked the look but I am not really a kimono kinda girl so I wanted to try and make some sort of tunic top to go with them. Something which covered my mum tum and hid any kind of VPL.<br />
<br />
I had originally wanted something just a bit boxy with an elasticated waist, but after a bit of planning I decided that a faux wrap type skirt would create a really nice shape paired with trousers. A bit of a search on the internet kept bringing me back to the <a href="https://sinclairpatterns.com/product/betty-faux-wrap-knit-dress-pdf-sewing-pattern/">Betty faux knit wrap dress from Sinclair Patterns</a>, I was really drawn to the shape of this dress and the faux wrap looks really flattering. I haven't ever used a Sinclair pattern before but it looked simple enough, and some research on other peoples makes brought back some lovely versions.<br />
<br />

<br />
Sure enough this pattern was really easy. The construction is very straightforward and I really liked the visual prompts on the PDF instructions. I think I am definitely a visual sewer, I much prefer to follow a diagram than read the actual writing. I cut a straight size UK10 because the proportions were pretty much spot on for me and it was a really good fit.<br />
<br />
The pattern comes with 2 versions; the wrap dress as above and a hip length blouse. Looking at the pattern I wasn't 100% sure the hip length version was going to give me the rear coverage I was after so I decided to cut the full skirt version out. Once I had constructed the skirt pieces I offered it up and marked roughly where I wanted it to finish. I then self drafted a new hemline following the original curves on the front and adding a dipped hem to the back. I then just continued with the construction of the dress as per the pattern instructions. It turned out really nicely and I absolutely love the shaping of this top, its so flattering and easy to wear. I also have had no issue with the top wrap section, it covers really nicely with no accidental flashing!<br />

The amazing <a href="https://www.minervacrafts.com/shop/fabric/dress-fabrics/mf-301018-29-glitter-stars-velour-knit-fabric-black-silver-per-metre">glitter star velour fabric is from Minerva Crafts</a>, I had been doing some research on star print fabrics without much luck, then Minerva sent me an email with this velour and it just had to be fate, there was no hesitation. I hadn't really imagined I would use a velour but it was such a good match it was daft not to go for it, and my god i'm happy I did - it's a match made in heaven. I have had a few miss sews with velvet this season so was a little apprehensive but this fabric behaved really well. Be warned though, my entire house is covered in flecks of glitter from this stuff, its driving Mr Fox a little bit insane. Its such a luxurious feeling fabric though, definitely very glam. </div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: inherit;">I will definitely make the full length version of this dress, and soon. I am thinking in a leopard print jersey, but I might raid my stash and see if I have 2m of jersey lying around so I can bust out another as its so easy to wear. </span></div>

<br />
Hi there, its been almost a month since I blogged but the truth of it is I have been on a bit of a slow sew of late. Life has been getting increasingly hectic and the pressures of keeping up with everything have been getting on top of me a bit. Sewing I often find is a pleasant release from all this, its a great way to clear my head of all the clutter, but sometimes it can feel like its just another thing stressing me out. Because of this I have been forcing myself to take a bit of time out when my head feels like it needs it rather than trying to force through that ever growing to sew list.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
What has been nice though is that the project I have had on the go has been to use up some of the jersey knits that I've been storing to make up a bunch of basic tees. Its just been some nice, easy, uncomplicated, stress free sewing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0EGJoRDK6AyneV_6XQIT_v4FHuTj7sIFf8jBST6r8P_MLNrN4qY3JT9ORICJBtsRW60ktFmrSI_OW_nuMcfsWS4lzrRc2e-EL6DQuzykZIWvMk0wgoY15jOwRZzxcxZb5FtmGU8WfR8wz/s1600/DSCF5071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0EGJoRDK6AyneV_6XQIT_v4FHuTj7sIFf8jBST6r8P_MLNrN4qY3JT9ORICJBtsRW60ktFmrSI_OW_nuMcfsWS4lzrRc2e-EL6DQuzykZIWvMk0wgoY15jOwRZzxcxZb5FtmGU8WfR8wz/s640/DSCF5071.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern I used is the Knit Sweetheart top pattern from the book <a href="http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/2014/09/its-here-gertie-sews-vintage-casual.html">Gertie Sews Vintage Casual</a>. I have made this top before, something I did early on after Fox cub number 2 which never made it to the blog sadly. The two versions I did make though have been in very heavy rotation in my wardrobe so I know that I like the fit and the way it looks.<br />
<br />
I love the details on this pattern. The cap sleeves are just adorable and sit well on my slightly larger upper arms. The gathering on the neckline gives a really nice finish and looks great with a striped fabric, you can see an example of this further down. Finally I love the depth of the neckline, it has such a lovely low scoop which is definitely my preferred depth.<br />
<br />
The pattern is easy to follow and the instructions are clear so its a very good starter for anyone new to jersey, or alternatively makes a great staple for anyone looking for a basic tee pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUyLvA6az7Lb_5XgzONDhV847e_awEzpKYlRiXARRMjQOGIpPKCv5lJA5DcPKTrwSgy12cqOrk5dRZuic6sBp5WAZKeJo5oLbjxyH_RMlwGw57Jc5DjnTCShrBXh1sSEKt93We0gR_VVmX/s1600/DSCF5022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUyLvA6az7Lb_5XgzONDhV847e_awEzpKYlRiXARRMjQOGIpPKCv5lJA5DcPKTrwSgy12cqOrk5dRZuic6sBp5WAZKeJo5oLbjxyH_RMlwGw57Jc5DjnTCShrBXh1sSEKt93We0gR_VVmX/s640/DSCF5022.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
One of the great things about this pattern is that the book goes on to give you lots of different ways to customise the pattern. You can see that I made a couple of versions where I omitted the gathering detail altogether which resulted in a plain jersey top with a lovely deep wide scoop. I also made some as cap sleeve and some as 3/4 sleeve. Sadly for pretty much all of them I didn't have enough fabric to make a long sleeved version but all these tops were made using just 1 metre of fabric or less.<br />
<br />
The version below I made into more of a pullover style top using some lovely fleecebacked jersey. I widened the side and arm sleeves by 1/2 inch then used ribbing to do the neck binding and add some cuff bands to the sleeves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I will give you more details about the fabrics I used below, though as I mentioned before this was a bit of a stash bust so sadly some of them will no longer be available. </div>

So whilst they took me quiet a while to do that's 5 tops in a month, and I really enjoyed the process of batch sewing. It was nice to just concentrate on one part of the process at a time and really take my time and not feel pressured to get stuff done. Sure there are a million things I would like to have sewn before Christmas but the truth is I don't need them and it feels nice to be able to let go of that self driven pressure. </div>

Do you have a favourite pattern that you just make over and over because its suits your style and our life? </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy Halloween! and hello on my most favourite of all the holidays. I absolutely love how year on year the UK seems to get more and more into Halloween and we are seeing so much more participation. We have a long way to go to complete with the likes of the US but I like the way this is heading. I'm even happier to be bringing you a halloween themed post.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been a bit slack this year and haven't managed to make the kids costumes, mostly because he wanted to be batman, and sadly I had to work on the day we could have gone to a toddler party. I also haven't managed to get out anywhere in fancy dress myself because, well, its a Wednesday BOO! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But its not all doom and gloom. thankfully I have a good friend who shares with me a love of fancy tights. So when I told her I wanted us to go out for a drink this week, just so we could wear striped tights, she was totally up for it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKrv8UffWDzgm0NFDOFHGa2jrY1LAuk3kEr3aSF5JtTVslD-XElxTvrz0XSVKTS4cjdts-Ndlfd5TrgBUHu2l6Yv5WU5SXhcGOGLj4_RChDYGpk10MoJO4dqAvEi_6oyvFEXYLAa837CHt/s1600/DSCF4950.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1280" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKrv8UffWDzgm0NFDOFHGa2jrY1LAuk3kEr3aSF5JtTVslD-XElxTvrz0XSVKTS4cjdts-Ndlfd5TrgBUHu2l6Yv5WU5SXhcGOGLj4_RChDYGpk10MoJO4dqAvEi_6oyvFEXYLAa837CHt/s640/DSCF4950.JPG" width="512" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what was I going to wear with these brilliantly orange tights? I decided I needed a plain little black dress, just something sassy, easy to wear and won't detract from the point of this exercise - the tights. So say hello to <a href="https://byhandlondon.com/products/georgia-dress">Georgia by By Hand London</a> a perfect pairing made again from some plain black cotton sateen from <a href="https://www.sewessential.co.uk/cotton-sateen-woven-fabric-black">Sew Essential</a>. I basically bought a load of this in bulk to test all my sewing patterns with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have made this pattern before so had already done a significant FBA on it. I still have some fitting issues with the cup section of this bodice, and its definitely something I want to get spot on, but for the purpose of this quick sew my boobs fit inside and thats all that really matters. I did make an adjustment to the straps and added a rather significant tie back halter instead of the thin straps. I had lots of ideas for the straps but this one has worked really well because it helps to hide the significant amount of chest that would be exposed if they weren't there. Something I can hopefully eliminate at a later date. I made the straps by basically cutting 4 really long tapered pieces of fabric and then just attaching them to the front of the bodice in the same way as you would the the normal straps. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjexjl7fPPUzlKIUTJ0cK3TjxhzAtrE6hvc74qVnav0Zz8NGoMQBMCl_3aQ-rurWwximRNXIy-NOcHBv2NiQ8yKTWEuk8dzHyQpbfR2uwCptEVCmM4ZCBzNM9iSp4xmOs4TprZ_zWtgB577/s1600/DSCF4952.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjexjl7fPPUzlKIUTJ0cK3TjxhzAtrE6hvc74qVnav0Zz8NGoMQBMCl_3aQ-rurWwximRNXIy-NOcHBv2NiQ8yKTWEuk8dzHyQpbfR2uwCptEVCmM4ZCBzNM9iSp4xmOs4TprZ_zWtgB577/s640/DSCF4952.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall i'm really happy, I think the outfit came together brilliantly, and whilst the sew isn't perfect its definitely a dress that I can get more use out of. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To round up here are the details of my sew:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pattern: <a href="https://byhandlondon.com/products/georgia-dress">By Hand London Georgia</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fabric: <a href="https://www.sewessential.co.uk/cotton-sateen-woven-fabric-black">Plain black cotton sateen from Sew Essential</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Extras: Just an invisible zipper</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Modifications: The straps. Instead of using the thin straps from the pattern I made wide tie halterneck straps and attached them to the front of the bodice</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fit: Really nice in the body, its is drafted as a 6-8-12 to fit my proportions. The bodice still needs some work in shape and coverage. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Difficulty: I am going to say Intermediate. I had a lot of trouble with the point in the middle of this dress and also because of my chest fitting issues, but otherwise the pattern is clear and has good instructions. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpvKZz2b_3eVmhjDFTF-046M-XO2KMiHYXE4IlhsWEDzM71gp0ZJXrdD_nRUFlseLyEACr0QVRASqpta7JgglDVO7QC2mtwDtC4O2i4vsIjhIPPF9aaMEiIVe7rEzx8CIc5khZLe4EqS4H/s1600/DSCF4948.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1280" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpvKZz2b_3eVmhjDFTF-046M-XO2KMiHYXE4IlhsWEDzM71gp0ZJXrdD_nRUFlseLyEACr0QVRASqpta7JgglDVO7QC2mtwDtC4O2i4vsIjhIPPF9aaMEiIVe7rEzx8CIc5khZLe4EqS4H/s640/DSCF4948.JPG" width="512" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What are you wearing for halloween this year? Have you made a costume, bought one, or have you just added a little detail to your daily wear? I would love to hear about it. </div>

<br />
Hi there, today I am so happy to share with you my latest make because I finally dared to cut into this amazing spangly fabric and I think I found the perfect pattern for it. Those that have been following me either here or on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thediyfox/?hl=en">instagram</a> will know that I have been testing skirt patterns over the last month or so in an effort to find the perfect pattern for this fabric. Well, as I was sewing my last piece, I had a crazy lightbulb moment and realised I already had the perfect pattern, tried and tested, and a perfect match; the <a href="https://shop.deer-and-doe.fr/en/sewing-patterns/18-chataigne-shorts-pattern.html">Chataigne shorts from Deer and Doe</a>.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The timing of this couldn't have worked out more perfectly either as I managed to get these sewn up just in time for our night out at the <a href="http://www.scarlettdaggers.com/ladeda.html">burlesque caberet La Dé Da</a>. There really couldn't be a more perfect occasion to wear a pair of glittery shorts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkzEM4s9royihI7Aamm92hE7NvMLjiOh192Pz3FCDcNRxaL31ryO5Sdqv0tU8OpB-OvqVnfaoMRQbA2fPkoUZAWexytmlZQM7xDhJv6tq_l8RxOL5Mie5XpxsReL45eTiwQFvYQLpBxMIU/s1600/s-l1600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkzEM4s9royihI7Aamm92hE7NvMLjiOh192Pz3FCDcNRxaL31ryO5Sdqv0tU8OpB-OvqVnfaoMRQbA2fPkoUZAWexytmlZQM7xDhJv6tq_l8RxOL5Mie5XpxsReL45eTiwQFvYQLpBxMIU/s320/s-l1600.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It really is impossible to do this fabric justice, and I certainly haven't managed it in these photos. The fabric is rainbow metallic essex yarn dyed linen by Robert Kaufman. It simply is stunning in real life. It comprises of black linen fabric with pink, blue and gold variegated metallic threads running throughout. In the light this stuff just sparkles! I originally spotted it on <a href="https://www.misformake.co.uk/">M is for Make</a> and fell in love with it, but sadly they had sold out by the time I decided I needed to swipe some up. Thankfully after some hunting I did manage to score some from Ebay, phew!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcq4nFu_4-XP1KFTh1z_j5eQMGcY4ECG0iTpl6ik7Zm7Q7-JIxMigQQUyzMR58nXSTSO8H-s6fgW9IZEqJrsBZEbSptqlbFgW_1FBg0buIOBFBAQiocbrrKsvlbqJgJSXZSDt0Oo1CiwRY/s1600/Metallic+shorts+full.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1281" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcq4nFu_4-XP1KFTh1z_j5eQMGcY4ECG0iTpl6ik7Zm7Q7-JIxMigQQUyzMR58nXSTSO8H-s6fgW9IZEqJrsBZEbSptqlbFgW_1FBg0buIOBFBAQiocbrrKsvlbqJgJSXZSDt0Oo1CiwRY/s640/Metallic+shorts+full.JPG" width="512" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think one of the reasons I struggled to find the perfect skirt pattern was because of the fabric being linen, it really doesn't have any stretch to it, but it also doesn't have a lot of body. Linen however lends itself brilliantly to trousers so matching it to the Chataigne shorts pattern was just inspired, I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier, but I am so glad I did. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have sewn this pattern a couple of times and it really one of my favourite patterns, I should sew it more! I know the fit is great, the length is good and its a lovely simple pattern to sew. I am not going to do a pattern review on this one because I have done it on the blog before, but it really is a lovely pattern, I do recommend. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdqftyEnk3TAdQ8Fgj_54ME__BkjEV6I2U6wG_gH8mKLpr-3nFSI6WRddEzB7xBiFKFl5stc-rzCA0oQ6JDbSzK_AeCud8U7Fzf9gNpnanO_IQHo3kHNCgsWfE9xqeELN8uTsblNwn3Bvx/s1600/Metallic+shorts+back.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1415" data-original-width="1415" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdqftyEnk3TAdQ8Fgj_54ME__BkjEV6I2U6wG_gH8mKLpr-3nFSI6WRddEzB7xBiFKFl5stc-rzCA0oQ6JDbSzK_AeCud8U7Fzf9gNpnanO_IQHo3kHNCgsWfE9xqeELN8uTsblNwn3Bvx/s640/Metallic+shorts+back.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Shorts are also very practical for my current lifestyle. I wish I could wear a shorter hemline more often, but the reality of it is that I spend a lot of my time either sitting on the floor or putting kids in and out of car seats. Shorts are the perfect solution to this dilemma, I can turn up to baby group or playdates and still sit cross-legged on the floor!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall I am overjoyed with these shorts, they are so amazing! I will definitely get a lot of wear out of them, I just need to find occasions to sparkle without 'wearing them out' so to speak! These definitely feel like a special make and I will treasure them for a long time. They also tie in brilliantly to my gorgeous irregular choice so that's a nice happy accident. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So to finish off this happy blog post here is a picture of me at the show enjoying champers in a plastic cup... its all classy here! Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you have a special treasured make you want to share with me please do leave me a comment, these things should be celebrated.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My quest for the perfect little black mini skirt pattern continues with this lovely little number and what a good contender it is. Its got a very cute shape and fit and is very versatile. I like it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern is Simplicity 1370 which comes with shorts, skort and skirt options. The skirt seems like the boring option but it is a lovely simple skirt and I really like the length. I love the multi options on this pattern which definitely makes it worth the money if you wear this kind of thing. I find Simplicity instructions a bit odd, I never find them easy to follow. I think I am more of a visual instruction kinda gal and Simplicity don't always do this well, but nevertheless it was a simple pattern so was very straighforward to make. My one bit of advice would be to check your size before buying though. It turns out I was a 12-14 in this pattern, but this envelope only went up to a 12. Its ok, the fit is fine, but it could have been a bit awkward. Definitely something to watch out for in the future. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I chose some black stretch denim for this mini skirt, mostly because I don't actually have any denim skirts in my wardrobe (bit odd I know!). This fabric was from the Village Haberdashery and its got a lot of stretch in, perfect for a pair of jeans. I have never sewn with denim before and do you know what I love it! Its so firm its a breeze to sew with. You obviously have to make sure you pick the right pattern for a denim fabric, but I think these were a perfect match because the structure of the denim helps the skirt hold its A line shape very well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also chose to try out another exposed zip, this time using the tutorial on the <a href="https://www.sewessential.co.uk/blog/how-to-sew-an-exposed-zip/">Sew Essential blog</a>. This method worked so much better. It was a little bit more complicated to execute but the finished result is a lot cleaner and I love how it looks on this denim skirt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also added some belt loops to the skirt so I could add a belt which I self drafted. In hindsight it wasn't the best move as the belt hide the zip so it looks a bit odd together but you don't need to wear a belt so its fine. It was a good bit of practice in case I want to add loops to another project in the future. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbticnT5YGVas2XLBP1Udij0nj7Wx9GOlKao0bZ6v06JcqUNQ7nXJs_dcRP9nuNqL70B8BhqWOyPmE2kPTplc3RCIGHvEX67H_VlkE6N3rHxI0RsKXkYKhmSO6gzKqU_iqfgysyui9Dcka/s1600/DSCF4917.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1244" data-original-width="1244" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbticnT5YGVas2XLBP1Udij0nj7Wx9GOlKao0bZ6v06JcqUNQ7nXJs_dcRP9nuNqL70B8BhqWOyPmE2kPTplc3RCIGHvEX67H_VlkE6N3rHxI0RsKXkYKhmSO6gzKqU_iqfgysyui9Dcka/s640/DSCF4917.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Please ignore that denim thread that I really should have noticed before I shot this! </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So to roundup:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pattern: Simplicity 1370</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fabric: <a href="https://thevillagehaberdashery.co.uk/products/cotton-poly-spandex-denim-ultra-black">Black stretch denim</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Extras: Exposed metal zipper</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Modifications: Added an exposed zip, added belt loops</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fit: Very nice, it sits nicely on the hips. I prefer my skirts to sit on the waist but its still a nice fit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Difficulty: Without the mods definitely beginner for the skirt. Its a very straighforward honest pattern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Would I make it again? Yes definitely, I want to try the other pattern options and am loving the idea of a tartan version of the wrap skirt</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just wish it had pockets! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho9RtisUGTbchr2DaaJTD75bunejqrTKDk7BAoOthGFKIkXF92vY4fGLTwEjvgqsSirrHbo6y6H9kxm_kFEBt-zwZVIB7Q08wko9LWnHr9LPlqUjzsZ_rheMMJA97IJbXTgkSiW5oND1wv/s1600/DSCF4907.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1281" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho9RtisUGTbchr2DaaJTD75bunejqrTKDk7BAoOthGFKIkXF92vY4fGLTwEjvgqsSirrHbo6y6H9kxm_kFEBt-zwZVIB7Q08wko9LWnHr9LPlqUjzsZ_rheMMJA97IJbXTgkSiW5oND1wv/s640/DSCF4907.JPG" width="512" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall a very nice skirt and a welcome addition to my wardrobe which I can see getting a good amount of wear. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have now decided on the pattern I am going to use to for my very special fabric and have already made a start... eek! I definitely think I made the right choice with it and I'm so excited to get it finished, watch this space. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Which version of his pattern would you sew first? Its so versatile. </div>

<br />
I've made so many fitted skirts lately I really wanted to get a bit of quick and dirty sewing out the way for a bit of instant gratification... well that didn't go to plan!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
I love to wear velvet in winter so I thought I would make a couple of cheap and cheerful crushed velvet tops. I picked the sweetheart top from <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gertie-Sews-Vintage-Casual-Sportswear/dp/1617690740/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538993665&sr=8-1&keywords=gertie+sews+vintage+casual">Gertie Sews Vintage Causal</a>. I've made this top before so I already had the pattern cut in the correct size and I knew how it fit together so figured it should be pretty easy.<br />
<br />
Sadly the fabric let me down quiet considerably. It was some very cheap crushed velvet from the marketplace. I know this stuff is not the easiest, but I think the biggest problem I had was that it was only a 2 way stretch and not a 4 way which all my other versions of this top have been. It made a considerable difference to how the fabric behaved and how the finished item looks and fits my body.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidT8eqWdhyphenhyphenedq4r0uYgeoXgvuMVbIQthL9sAgMmJjavpqEYDHUTL7HDipeZ3N5j3G9Awtgi4W6brW5ZMeoi85utvA7l1kRQ4NuWLJSWxnuAf5PJm0kvYoa2GLtukXooxCQ5q6PXLRjRcgw/s1600/velvet+sweetheart2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidT8eqWdhyphenhyphenedq4r0uYgeoXgvuMVbIQthL9sAgMmJjavpqEYDHUTL7HDipeZ3N5j3G9Awtgi4W6brW5ZMeoi85utvA7l1kRQ4NuWLJSWxnuAf5PJm0kvYoa2GLtukXooxCQ5q6PXLRjRcgw/s640/velvet+sweetheart2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I tried to make 2 two versions of this top, this purple one and a black one, but the black one went so horribly wrong that the only place for it sadly was the bin! The purple one has thankfully sewn up ok and is wearable, though the neckline keeps riding up. I wasn't planning on adding the ruched neckline to this top but I may have to put it in to make the front pull down a bit so the neckline doesn't sit so high.<br />
<br />
So on reflection I have thankfully managed to get one wearable top from the ordeal, but I definitely won't be buying any 2 way stretch fabric for a while. Definitely a lesson learnt here! I'm not going to say any more because I don't think its good to dwell on a bad sew but I will be back to attach this pattern again at a later date as it is one of my favourite wardrobe staples.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm on a bit of a quest to find a really good little skirt pattern so that I can brave cutting up some really special fabric I have, you will have to watch this space to see if I ever actually do it but for now here is my latest mock up. The great bonus of mocking up a load of black skirts is I am filling my wardrobe with some lovely basics.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A couple of weeks ago I made my first <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=sew+over+it+ultimate+pencil+skirt&rlz=1C1MSNA_enGB707GB707&oq=sew+over+it+ulti&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j35i39j0l4.3757j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8">So Over It Ultimate Pencil Skirt</a>, I really like this skirt and I've already worn it a couple of times, however I don't think it was quiet the right cut I was looking for for this project. I really liked the fit in the waist but I wanted something a bit shorter and not quiet so fitted at the bottom, so I made a few adjustments to the pattern.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Firstly I graded it out at the hips to a size bigger because my hips and seat are a little generous, I took a large chunk of length off the bottom and finally I straightened the side seam down from the hip to make it a little less fitted. I am really pleased with the final shape of the skirt its a great length and a lovely shape. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjakbxYG535vE_1Y6_jYofSn819fO4ZK_0V6NOpMrYqBVsuM-g0ecGFbSc-bta7KG8rq_qEKDkIKCmF-kmgLxRuCcG-uHbbJFgBPI1LVzfGAfOKe2QnXkm58flNoZSJk1mQXUe2ZN-y0tm2/s1600/bmsmulti.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1149" data-original-width="1600" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjakbxYG535vE_1Y6_jYofSn819fO4ZK_0V6NOpMrYqBVsuM-g0ecGFbSc-bta7KG8rq_qEKDkIKCmF-kmgLxRuCcG-uHbbJFgBPI1LVzfGAfOKe2QnXkm58flNoZSJk1mQXUe2ZN-y0tm2/s640/bmsmulti.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the same plain black cotton sateen fabric from <a href="https://www.sewessential.co.uk/fabrics/dressmaking-fabrics/plain-woven-fabrics/plain-stretch-cotton-sateen">Sew Essential</a> that I used for my previous version of this skirt. Its very forgiving because it has a lot of stretch in it and very easy to sew with. Its a great staple fabric, though it is a bit of a fluff magnet! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For this version I also wanted to add something to make it a bit more fun so instead of an invisible zip I added a nice metal exposed zipper. I really love this detail, I've never done an exposed zip before but it really adds a bit extra to a plain black skirt. I used the first method on <a href="https://blog.treasurie.com/how-to-sew-an-exposed-zipper/">this site</a> to add my zip but I'm not 100% happy with the finish. The fabric is quiet thick so I didn't get a clean seam, thankfully the fabric being black its not at all obvious. I will try a different method next time to see if I can get a cleaner finish but the overall effect is great. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9EIAhCdUdq0SybckL0wRXZ-6zrsKw5LOl5f_2gb88MZyhys4-OHyfOwSRYROKsx_L9EaRGPIjUYkGSkOPyPaH4pA63QDfbyQEqvqjCslhbE_byKI94-9-BFk1PmWzdvmzpYmF2U-OD736/s1600/back+detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="930" data-original-width="930" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9EIAhCdUdq0SybckL0wRXZ-6zrsKw5LOl5f_2gb88MZyhys4-OHyfOwSRYROKsx_L9EaRGPIjUYkGSkOPyPaH4pA63QDfbyQEqvqjCslhbE_byKI94-9-BFk1PmWzdvmzpYmF2U-OD736/s640/back+detail.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So to sum up:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pattern: <a href="https://sewoverit.co.uk/product/ultimate-pencil-skirt-sewing-pattern/">Sew Over It Ultimate Pencil Skirt</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fabric: <a href="https://www.sewessential.co.uk/fabrics/dressmaking-fabrics/plain-woven-fabrics/plain-stretch-cotton-sateen">Stretch cotton sateen in black from Sew Essential</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Extras: 12" metal zipper</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Modifications: A few; Shortened length, straightened side seems, added exposed zip</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fit: It feels like its pulling a bit in the side seams so I might need to go a size bigger but thankfully this fabric is very stretchy so its very forgiving.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Difficulty: The exposed zip was a little more complicated being a new technique but otherwise pretty easy</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Would I make it again?: probably yes</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So is this the right pattern for my fabric? I'm still not sure, though its a great addition to my wardrobe. I actually want to try sewing a skirt with a waistband so I have another pattern to try before I make a decision so watch this space. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Do you sew plain wardrobe staples? As sewists I think we find plain clothes like this really hard given all the fun things you could be sewing instead! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I finally got round to stitching up the headband from the first issue of the new simply sewing magazine using the free polka dot fabric which came with the magazine. The mag did provide patterns and instructions for three things which could all be created from the one piece of fabric provided. First was this headband, second a gathered fabric flower and third a fabric covered book. I have done both the gathered flowers and a covered book on the blog already so I have gone for the headband (and I used the rest of the fabric to make the pockets of my new dress!) </span></div>

<br />
The instructions were really easy to follow, and the headband was really easy to make. All you need is a sewing machine, some thread and a small piece of elastic. I decided to make my headband a little snazzier though. I used a pink thread for my top stitching instead of black and also made this really cute little pink fabric bow out of a bit of scrap fabric I had. I hand stitched the bow onto the headband to neatly sit about where my parting lies. Now this cute little headband matches my hair and includes a little extra detail and interest which I really like.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi494RbYw_RFTTuljNm8ZGKVmPuD48NQfgxT5cdO4mFtkbR0xbY70EgHH4s0xTAx-Cpj-dgYgB6OxC9YdIoLfuYQ6mydlf-hL6W7cIMRnIn1JobbFkFysT2t4ILn5wCfNszHzUbGlwt9UF4/s1600/polka2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="484" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi494RbYw_RFTTuljNm8ZGKVmPuD48NQfgxT5cdO4mFtkbR0xbY70EgHH4s0xTAx-Cpj-dgYgB6OxC9YdIoLfuYQ6mydlf-hL6W7cIMRnIn1JobbFkFysT2t4ILn5wCfNszHzUbGlwt9UF4/s1600/polka2.JPG" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I don't tend to wear headbands all that often, however I have posted before about how stupid I look in hats! Being fair, and needing to keep the sun off my head, a nice thick fabric band like this is perfect for keeping me sun safe and still looking sharp. I definitely think I will be making up another one of these once we get summer fully into swing (really hoping we get a summer!). It would work really well in any kind of polycotton, quilting cotton or cotton poplin. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If you want to make one of these for yourself hurry out to the shops for your own copy of the new simply sewing magazine. But hurry, I think issue two will be out very soon. </div>

<br />
Following on from the adorable fox dress I made Miss Fox last week (if you missed it go <a href="https://www.thediyfox.co.uk/2018/09/lil-foxy-critter.html">check it out here</a>) here is the second of the two dresses I made. I know the fox dress is super cute and all that but I actually think this one is my favourite, I mean that colour is just adorable and so perfect for this more autumnal weather that's finally coming our way.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
One of the reasons I wanted to whizz out a couple of new dresses for Miss Fox is because of the change in seasons and how that changes the way we dress. I love pastels for little girls in the summer but come autumn/winter these jewel tones are just to die for don't you agree.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4IQLM-E-rYAspgHGB_PqdiKQwhtXXyNWM7mvNazgp9KYYtNzUTuUCdqeh7tODTnmzSnmgGyqm_v1C3cRNyXWNKo0_smg4TJmNBO3QyamlMKFZc4uPF0iZ096LDAQu8zTW4paw41b-2Brx/s1600/galaxy2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4IQLM-E-rYAspgHGB_PqdiKQwhtXXyNWM7mvNazgp9KYYtNzUTuUCdqeh7tODTnmzSnmgGyqm_v1C3cRNyXWNKo0_smg4TJmNBO3QyamlMKFZc4uPF0iZ096LDAQu8zTW4paw41b-2Brx/s640/galaxy2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do with the bib for this purple dress but I knew I wanted to put some details on it. I headed over to <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/?ref=lgo">Etsy</a> and had a little search for iron on patches. I like to set my searches on Etsy to 'handmade' in the 'United Kingdom' because you can find some amazing UK artists out there and with it being a predominately US based site it means you don't need to stress about the shipping costs.<br />
<br />
Well this lucrative little search found me the shop of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/OHNORachio">OHNORachio</a>, I mean seriously how cute are these little guys! The only problem I had with her shop was my indecision of which patches to use, so basically I just bought them all, whoops! You can't blame me though can you, they are adorable and they have really made this dress something special. I really like how the yellow and the green of the sun and planet pop against the colour of this dress. The best bit is I still have a couple of patches to play with in the future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2viDNReNbUz_xBOOBkbbGuN7t13eYkVVQD3EyXCmE2SENLLDcjI7Xf0g3NapBPkmCH1sBCB_GiIMVdpkiIlr96rcBtbqhxNhOm98ILBINdlxuPlu0a123Ikx0mLeHnQFL3B8Ig81M7V6F/s1600/spacechloe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2viDNReNbUz_xBOOBkbbGuN7t13eYkVVQD3EyXCmE2SENLLDcjI7Xf0g3NapBPkmCH1sBCB_GiIMVdpkiIlr96rcBtbqhxNhOm98ILBINdlxuPlu0a123Ikx0mLeHnQFL3B8Ig81M7V6F/s640/spacechloe.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once again I used the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/250498114/lil-critters-girl-baby-girl-pinafore?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=lil%20critters&ref=sr_gallery-1-2&organic_search_click=1">Lil Critters dress pattern by Puperita</a>, they always recommend sizing by height on Puperita patterns so I measured Miss Fox on the door frame and picked the size accordingly. As you can see the fit is great on her and there is a still a little bit of growing room. To be honest she has a version of this dress I made her last year and she can still get it on now even if it is a little short, but I just pair with leggings so its a great pattern for longevity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a couple of very minor adjustments to the pattern: I omitted the side pockets which are built into the skirt, when tracing the pattern piece I just drew straight up and across from the other seam lines to make a full skirt piece. I also omitted the patch pockets on the bib and the back in favour of the iron on patches. Both adjustments were really easy and just show you how versatile this pattern can be. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAueN1GPjjvE5VR-zC_thbMQfvPALDYwAWK_KLaUmiFGOz6eiz7dVeeKF4WqTEoYTQ8X8g2DEII_xvgNPqdllbUYmMfaHCQdF_dDv9AyhbROKz_cFP4b-zyBGBOauyrW262gyyOC7d9Npn/s1600/galaxy3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAueN1GPjjvE5VR-zC_thbMQfvPALDYwAWK_KLaUmiFGOz6eiz7dVeeKF4WqTEoYTQ8X8g2DEII_xvgNPqdllbUYmMfaHCQdF_dDv9AyhbROKz_cFP4b-zyBGBOauyrW262gyyOC7d9Npn/s640/galaxy3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used to baby/needlecord fabric again for this one as I did with the fox version. Its such a lovely fabric to sew with, perfect for autumn outfits and the colours are so lush. I lined this one with some beautiful liberty cutoffs which a friend game me and they are such a lovely fit with the colour of the bodice. There's not much else to say about the fabric really, its such a perfect fit for this pattern.<br />
<br />
So, what I want to know is do you have any sew/iron on patch recommendations for me, because I think this could become a new obsession. Also, what are your favourite colours for autumn/winter? Please feel free to leave me a comment :)<br />

One of the things that seems to come as part of the territory with being a Fox is being tagged for every item of baby fox clothing imaginable! Now if you've read my blog before, or looked at my instagram you will have seen there has been no shortage of fox related crafts, however it seemed it was time to recreate that ever popular Fox dress we see popping in up in all sorts of guises all over the internet.<br />
<br />
I've always been very defensive about people interpreting fox dresses because I have been a huge fan of the work of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/wildthingsdresses">Wild Things Dresses on Etsy </a>for a long time (honestly, these are the most amazing kids clothes ever!). However it seems that sadly all the high brand kids retailers have cottoned on and copied her designs in one form or another, which as a creative makes me very sad. So if you want an amazing dress like this one, and are not a sewer, please pay her a visit and purchase one of her amazing creations.<br />

<br />
Here is an image of one of their amazing fox dresses along with the book which so thankfully tells you how to make your own, perfect for the likes of me who get enjoyment out of the process of making as well as the clothes.<br />
<br />
I do have a copy of the book, as you can see in my first image, but sadly the patterns don't run as small as Miss Fox, so in this instance I have had to improvise a bit until she grows up and I can use the patterns in this book.<br />
<br />
I used a tried and tested pattern the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/250498114/lil-critters-girl-baby-girl-pinafore">Lil Critters dress from Puperita</a>. This pattern is so easy to follow and is the perfect dungaree bib dress, with slightly flared skirt it really is adorable. As with all her patterns the instructions are really clear and are a doddle to follow so I managed to make 2 of these on my day off today. Go me!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5GUTIjoQEsydbwFMb3-AOZfWRmWnEnocZEO0YvcNQxHDWA9ba1pH_PIIDo-JWWgScb6BPfG4KojrpG87PFxeHYDCizsX8UhXIGIiLAamhFHiykCEAnGpAQ-GgPdLs_20tjjAI9iMWx3eK/s1600/fox3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5GUTIjoQEsydbwFMb3-AOZfWRmWnEnocZEO0YvcNQxHDWA9ba1pH_PIIDo-JWWgScb6BPfG4KojrpG87PFxeHYDCizsX8UhXIGIiLAamhFHiykCEAnGpAQ-GgPdLs_20tjjAI9iMWx3eK/s640/fox3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In order to make the fox face I just drew the shapes onto the original bib piece and then traced the individual shapes onto separate paper adding a 1cm seam allowance where I needed to join the pieces together. I am really happy with how it all came out, its a very cute little foxy face and this pattern lent itself really well to this adaptation.<br />
<br />
For the fabric I used some babycord or needle cord which is very fine corduroy fabric. I love making dresses for kids in cord for Autumn/winter, its such a nice thick fabric and is relatively easy to sew and comes in a huge array of wonderful colours. It can be a little stiff but that's why it lends itself so well to this type of dungaree pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I'm really chuffed with how this turned out and its a lovely fit on her so should serve her well this winter. I will definitely make more of this pattern and there will definitely be more Fox dresses in Miss Fox's future.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Hi there, you know I've been putting off making a pencil skirt for such a long time, but I have no idea why. I think its got a lot to do with a skirt I tried to make when I first started sewing from a free pattern which just didn't really turn out that well. Thankfully though I have finally gotten over that hump and I bought the <a href="https://sewoverit.co.uk/product/ultimate-pencil-skirt-sewing-pattern/">Sew Over It Ultimate Pencil Skirt pattern</a>. I've bought a few fabrics from SOI before, but never sewn one of their patterns.<br />
<br />
There are a huge number of pencil skirt patterns in the market but I have heard good reviews about this one in terms of fit from social media and a quick hunt of instagram showed up some really lovely examples. It seemed like a good fit to try out SOI with this pattern. The style and fit of this skirt are just spot on for the way I like to dress at the minute, especially for work.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI0tWr0FrIG3J8bj5kywhKWYqNWhYB_GKsvL4zcMMiyYEWFGlF1-UxwA1RX55LG3o1BojFrxGPwiKT7jWVIPe0Yv9jikNlIwccnWFSKjbvdqTeHx4OpaKTReHsKrSaz2X1DxkVbIPVk65m/s1600/IMG_3335.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI0tWr0FrIG3J8bj5kywhKWYqNWhYB_GKsvL4zcMMiyYEWFGlF1-UxwA1RX55LG3o1BojFrxGPwiKT7jWVIPe0Yv9jikNlIwccnWFSKjbvdqTeHx4OpaKTReHsKrSaz2X1DxkVbIPVk65m/s640/IMG_3335.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Lately I have been reaching to my wardrobe for a black skirt in this morning, but the truth of the matter is I actually only have 1 which fits me. So to rectify this I am on a promise to myself to make myself some more black skirts. I have some gorgeous metallic fabric earmarked for this project but I wanted to toile it first so I ordered some <a href="https://www.sewessential.co.uk/fabrics/dressmaking-fabrics/plain-woven-fabrics/plain-stretch-cotton-sateen">plain black cotton sateen from Sew Essential</a>. This fabric is perfect for this skirt because it has a good amount of stretch in it. It meant that even if I cut the pattern ever so slightly on the small side I knew there would be some give in it. Its a lovely quality fabric and I'm glad I bought a few meters. I can definitely see me using the rest for some other projects.<br />
<br />
I had absolutely no problem with sewing this up. The fabric was so easy to work with and the pattern was perfectly straightforward. I really don't know why I put this off for so long, and the results speak for themselves, I mean look at how sleek it is. I had no issues with fit and it fit me straight from the packet, which barely ever happens, though I think the stretch sateen might have something to do with that. All in all it only took me a few hours to complete this the first time so I will definitely be making more. I don't know if its just me but I did find the instructions a little simplistic, I had to google the SOI blog for the kick pleat instructions, but that might just be the nature of the drawing inside rather than the instructions themselves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD2hOml3UAJHo7kx0c6OqdnIEeU8WEA8J0ejoPAXmq70k3M7Mcz0TH_29X8ImkLP687X6-2CH0Mb4yy6LIe9f0ESwkkpA02-tvLodebvbLMFeBiNFHFZRc1RGys8pGQ_LWjV8XMsejjDJt/s1600/image2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD2hOml3UAJHo7kx0c6OqdnIEeU8WEA8J0ejoPAXmq70k3M7Mcz0TH_29X8ImkLP687X6-2CH0Mb4yy6LIe9f0ESwkkpA02-tvLodebvbLMFeBiNFHFZRc1RGys8pGQ_LWjV8XMsejjDJt/s640/image2.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
To Sum it up:<br />
Pattern: Sew Over it Ultimate Pencil Skirt<br />
Fabric: Stretch cotton sateen in black purchased from Sew Essential<br />
Extras: a 12" invisible zipper<br />
Modifications: I took about 6" off the total length in the end as I prefer my skirts to sit just over the knee than below but I am quiet short.<br />
Fit: Like a glove!<br />
Difficulty: Pretty easy<br />
<br />
So I love this skirt, I mean its sexy no?! I will definitely make another, and I want to have a go at lining it next time as this one doesn't do to well with tights. I mentioned earlier about it being a toile, I actually don't think this skirt is right for the fabric I had in mind but I have made a couple of alternations to the pattern to change it up a bit and will do another toile shortly to see how that goes on... watch this space.<br />
<br />
Have you sewn up this pattern, or are you putting off a project because of something that went wrong in the past? Let me know about it, I would love even more to hear about your post drama successes x<br />

<br />
Hello there and welcome to my first pattern show off in quiet some time. I've been really keen to start sewing properly for myself again, and by properly I mean making something fitted not just more jersey.<br />
<br />
This is the <a href="https://shop.deer-and-doe.fr/en/sewing-patterns/21-bruyere-shirt-pattern.html">Bruyere</a> shirt by Deer and Doe made up in some cotton shirting fabric which I bought online from <a href="https://www.croftmill.co.uk/">Croft Mill</a>.<br />
<br />
I actually bought the fabric and pattern for this make in May last year when I was heavily pregnant with Fox cub #2 with the intention of it being a staple part of my breastfeeding wardrobe. Fast forward a year and the reality of the situation was that I couldn't face making all the adjustments to the pattern whilst my body was still ever changing shape.<br />
<br />
I'm really pleased to have picked it up now though and got my head around all the adjustments because I just love it and I think one of the main reasons for that is the thought I put into embellishing it, more on that shortly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG0Vbdkl9R3obt4fE6OSFiv91znieY_MiwZ5WQtEwEajC5c30_71IxnIMOkVXqMgCgRc1SXuRUOwfHKXRTvr-NDlQy3uKhRcgtyrBUdjGug7oUNYW5sQ1mW8JkadgzZ84fWKegOmnChppB/s1600/bruyere+close.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG0Vbdkl9R3obt4fE6OSFiv91znieY_MiwZ5WQtEwEajC5c30_71IxnIMOkVXqMgCgRc1SXuRUOwfHKXRTvr-NDlQy3uKhRcgtyrBUdjGug7oUNYW5sQ1mW8JkadgzZ84fWKegOmnChppB/s640/bruyere+close.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Fitting:</b> I had to do a number of adjustments to this pattern; my usual full bust adjustment which is to add a whole inch into the front section and remove an inch from the back because for some reason I have a very small back. I found this a bit daunting at first for this pattern as there are so many adjoining pieces: the waistband and the collar and these would all need adjusting as well as the pleats in the skirt. I'm pleased to say though it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined, my toile of the bodice turned out perfectly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well then it all went wrong didn't it! Somehow when I retraced my new bodice piece to make a proper pattern piece I didn't cut it properly and the bodice was far too big. I was gutted. I spent so much time on the fit and then had planned and bought all the notions I really didn't want it to end up in the bin. Thankfully my very talented sister came to my rescue and suggested I added a neck dart which we then turned into a fake princess seam to remove the bulk. Its not as great as my toile but thanks to her its now completely wearable so thank you Rachel x</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7X3RZam8Iu5wxZ0oSW-SbzGaWlHD0Bcu4LNx1HjsgB_Twn_qId21SxcOqOofDYaL6Go1sVjwPY2ZzS5vVnS-K_CBuhvVuOo7cKFDBGoFFQD41tmYPaAz73dgFSaB8eg4HRMRz0D2o9B0Q/s1600/close+up+collar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7X3RZam8Iu5wxZ0oSW-SbzGaWlHD0Bcu4LNx1HjsgB_Twn_qId21SxcOqOofDYaL6Go1sVjwPY2ZzS5vVnS-K_CBuhvVuOo7cKFDBGoFFQD41tmYPaAz73dgFSaB8eg4HRMRz0D2o9B0Q/s640/close+up+collar.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Bling:</b> Well i'm sure your keen eyes have already spotted them but yes, I added a studded collar, its frikkin awesome I love it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After I started Me Made May this year I realised I had a lot of clothes that I liked but that I didn't love. I decided after that to try and think a lot more about what I was making and how to make sure it really stood out and felt a lot more special. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had a number of ideas for this shirt: Holograph star applique, metal collar cuffs, rainbow buttons, glitter but in the end these simple studs won out. I think they really make this shirt and the buttons are such a perfect match for them. Its functional but still a bit edgy. I could easily wear this chilling in the park like today, smart for the office or glammed up for a night out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6iOLInKMdgFFtBJdQ3etfODhmihsbTWliNpt6CTzi_Z9wtzBegK30S3XGeXBeRUbDPQ_fxKMG4JYN7oUHec8am08gPB1UAVFfZ12FJOvNy_7xfgRoHH_fpYJ_qCbOMnXDkwhn4qJBk194/s1600/bruyere+back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6iOLInKMdgFFtBJdQ3etfODhmihsbTWliNpt6CTzi_Z9wtzBegK30S3XGeXBeRUbDPQ_fxKMG4JYN7oUHec8am08gPB1UAVFfZ12FJOvNy_7xfgRoHH_fpYJ_qCbOMnXDkwhn4qJBk194/s640/bruyere+back.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b>Will I make it again: </b>Definitely! I need to test my pattern adjustments properly. I still want to try those rainbow buttons so might try a black dobby fabric or similar. I also have some fabric which I might use to try a dress hack version.<br />
<br />
<b>Would I recommend: </b>Yes, its not nearly as difficult to make as I expected it to be and its such a flattering fit ,especially if you are lucky enough to have an hourglass figure like me.<br />
<br />
<br />
Do you ever embellish your makes? I'd love to see them or hear your ideas.<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading and hopefully this will be the start of me blogging on a more regular basis again.The DIY Foxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16797363811624145210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4047764806383577395.post-30500691882512481502018-05-31T09:00:00.000+01:002018-05-31T09:00:07.429+01:00Me Made May 2018 - Why I loved it, and why I didn't<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3e6WUWH5KTZHcFxelcPp3WN6cbpx4q4JeEKBwcOzzG3EA9MfrTSlKUN0-gnmF0ldrUkSEugFaAkmyxfRnlOIO-QTr9armpqbSZQy4x0nSroafBvCpyuCQuvnITYJjfe32chNU-MM_VFmN/s1600/DSCF3446v2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1500" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3e6WUWH5KTZHcFxelcPp3WN6cbpx4q4JeEKBwcOzzG3EA9MfrTSlKUN0-gnmF0ldrUkSEugFaAkmyxfRnlOIO-QTr9armpqbSZQy4x0nSroafBvCpyuCQuvnITYJjfe32chNU-MM_VFmN/s640/DSCF3446v2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Wow, as if you weren't sick enough of my face I had to go blog about it too!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
Those that have seen my instagram will be acutely aware I took part in Me Made May this year. This is something that has been going on for a number of years on instagram but this year was the first year I felt I probably had enough clothes to get me through the month - which I thankfully did. The base concept is to wear handmade clothes through the whole of May, this can take on various guises but I took it in its literal form. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I just wanted to document how it went for me; my thoughts, why I found it really useful and why I actually hated parts of it. I'm going to cover what I learnt about my style and my sewing, my favourite outfits and also your favourite outfits. Its more of a record for myself than anything but I am pleased its given me enough drive to return to my blog.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
Selfies - all the selfies</h3>
<div>
This was the reason I hated this concept. Honestly, I got bored of my own face so I can bet my bottom dollar you did too (so you know i'll just write a blog and fill it with me again!). Then there was the orchestration of it all. Do I have someone to take the picture for me, or do I have to prop my camera/phone up somewhere precarious, how many pictures do I actually need to take to get a decent one, loading them on to my phone, sorting through them, making a post etc etc. It was honestly exhausting so I'm very happy to be back to posting on my own schedule. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgF9OI-XkuymukWl4d3v_2faQtrORS1QBn8FIabY66dO8gngPMcHwaYRlvU5cLJsW9iW3ZFkuHmqKQ613rTj5Ct60x2mLayazfl4JdpKjfPZ0lwtkzAxpiBXXvm22zKPgqmlwAH7ZoeqpT/s1600/IMG_1097.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1353" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgF9OI-XkuymukWl4d3v_2faQtrORS1QBn8FIabY66dO8gngPMcHwaYRlvU5cLJsW9iW3ZFkuHmqKQ613rTj5Ct60x2mLayazfl4JdpKjfPZ0lwtkzAxpiBXXvm22zKPgqmlwAH7ZoeqpT/s640/IMG_1097.JPG" width="540" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
My style </h3>
<div>
Over the past month I have discovered for the most part I have 3 distinct styles which I am going to call;</div>
<div>
Rockabilly</div>
<div>
Goth as fuck </div>
<div>
or 15 year old</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm not sure they gel perfectly well together in terms of having a 'capsule wardrobe' or whatever that is because a lot of it depends on my mood and what I am doing on that day. Obviously rockabilly works best for formal and work, Goth as works best on a night out and the 15 year old is just me trying to chill in something a bit more quirky. It does feel a little bit like I lack direction sometimes and I should just pick one but I don't want to do that, this is me and that's how I like it. Does anyone else find they don't really conform to one style? what influences what you wear?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1athq5KFtZqfOawjlM691o381St4I_YWxNs-nUOymx3nb_ybPBkPoCOiRmNkGbC0ahZxwM-kmxP0qsBeg6tTS4viAGc9840sCcSL1Th_NGquRh2cz8Ke_ln8yBBSYOzUtFOVayBr2SHhr/s1600/1152D31D-07DB-42C7-B1FA-7F814FB7AB8A.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1athq5KFtZqfOawjlM691o381St4I_YWxNs-nUOymx3nb_ybPBkPoCOiRmNkGbC0ahZxwM-kmxP0qsBeg6tTS4viAGc9840sCcSL1Th_NGquRh2cz8Ke_ln8yBBSYOzUtFOVayBr2SHhr/s640/1152D31D-07DB-42C7-B1FA-7F814FB7AB8A.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I also noted that I have a definite preferences for paler colours up by my face and darker on my lower half. I think a lot of that is down to my hair being paler now so wearing black higher up washes it out a bit. This lead me on to have a good think about the types of colours I think work with my skin tone and the kinds of patterns I liked (note a distinct lack of floral!). Making sure I keep this in mind for my future sewing I'm hopefully more likely to make clothes that I LOVE rather than just being a little meh. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
My favourite outfits:</h3>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can see a selection of my favourite outfits below. The reason for picking these was largely based on 2 factors: How they made me feel and how easy they were to wear. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVCd-q_NuduCaPTgD0Lsw4w_QdqBcndP2WVKhHc_3P4VuPQ4jVKTXRMMziXMMqv58j11Uv_2bkZtytW1vKStfZyCM3yf3qH-EUfABoVuLuN49LZ8zEJuD69WgfJqYQ6Q7eKj3MSbeV9ebx/s1600/my+fave.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1057" data-original-width="1600" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVCd-q_NuduCaPTgD0Lsw4w_QdqBcndP2WVKhHc_3P4VuPQ4jVKTXRMMziXMMqv58j11Uv_2bkZtytW1vKStfZyCM3yf3qH-EUfABoVuLuN49LZ8zEJuD69WgfJqYQ6Q7eKj3MSbeV9ebx/s640/my+fave.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
From left to right: </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Bettine by Tilly and the buttons in Atelier Brunette 'like a dandy', Another Bettine in some emerald viscose (this creases so bad but its soooooo comfy), A very altered Megan Nielsen maternity skirt in gold spot ponte roma (top is from collectif clothing).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Simplicity 8342 in some old lightning cotton jersey, Colette Zinnia skirt in flamingo cotton lawn, Lilou dress from Tilly first book in some houndstooth viscose</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
Your favourite outfits:</h3>
<div>
These were the outfits that got the most likes during the month. Sorry the third picture is not the one from instagram but I can't find the original (I've gone through 3 phones this month, my photos are all over). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can definitely see why they are some of your favourites they are all very striking outfits. especially the fabric in the middle one its so pretty. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3LIcPpzH6GL0kB7iAQv2WZ_RIq21wC9aOQtrXZu4xFpVVtrhPKOKONDhPlYHbEwVfw1NMn_RX8nZaRSPKwyPpn7DVCmY3m2BXeKGvVT2F0PbCtm4iAAny0wAUuQZrKRnMhDkefGmKItSR/s1600/your+fave.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="1600" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3LIcPpzH6GL0kB7iAQv2WZ_RIq21wC9aOQtrXZu4xFpVVtrhPKOKONDhPlYHbEwVfw1NMn_RX8nZaRSPKwyPpn7DVCmY3m2BXeKGvVT2F0PbCtm4iAAny0wAUuQZrKRnMhDkefGmKItSR/s640/your+fave.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
From left to right:<br />
<br />
Kim dress from By Hand London in some llama print Robert Kaufman cotton, Another Bettine in some stunning crepe from Sew Over It, Wren dress by Colette patterns in some blue lightning jersey from Stof & Stil<br />
<br /></div>
<h3>
So where does that leave me?</h3>
<div>
<div>
The one thing I did realise is that I don't have many great clothes for super hot days. I HATE not wearing tights and having bare legs. Even in a knee length skirt, if its a flared skirt and there is a slight breeze i'd still rather have tights on. I need to address that in my handmade wardrobe and i'm thinking some maxi skirt/dresses might be a nice way to go.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also realised that a lot of my outfits just felt really uninspiring. Some clothes, whilst plain, can just make you feel great but I found a lot of my clothes just lacked lustre. With this in mind I am going to try and pay more attention to what I make and give it some consideration before I jump in. This starts with fabric and pattern choices but also what can I wear with it, can I bling it up a bit, does it need accessorising etc. Generally I need more sparkles in my life!<br />
<br />
Overall it was a very helpful experience. I don't think I will do it so publicly again but it certainly came at the perfect time when I'm just getting back into personal sewing and it has motivated and invigorated me. Hopefully I can use this drive to take my sewing and style to the next level.<br />
<br />
As a final side note the blog is very broken. I accidentally let me domain name lapse just after having little Miss Fox and now they want to charge me extortionate rates to have it back so it has changed to a .co.uk domain. This means all my internal links are broken, not the mention all my pinterest ones which just makes me want to cry. So I will be quietly trying to work on that and get this thing going with a bit of gusto again.<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoyed seeing my makes, I really enjoyed everyone elses and got some great inspiration so thank you to everyone that took part and took the time to like my posts. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCik745U21EUAmHvXpKlvuuc1ZRfbIjzl0m924Nuzp8FImNMtQJQEJ81B-4-JbZ4p31IxvUDszhZQc8oxcacAgcttpz5X0yb8W4kMHL2NpzieCe7f-L4dCwxfFyJtQZi6WQuQe88ksLexS/s1600/ts1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1321" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCik745U21EUAmHvXpKlvuuc1ZRfbIjzl0m924Nuzp8FImNMtQJQEJ81B-4-JbZ4p31IxvUDszhZQc8oxcacAgcttpz5X0yb8W4kMHL2NpzieCe7f-L4dCwxfFyJtQZi6WQuQe88ksLexS/s640/ts1.jpg" width="528" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How amazing is this fabric! Master Fox is a big fan of basically anything Disney, I would tell you which is his fave but it changes weekly so who knows which it will be by the time this post is published. Having said that he is always happy to go back to an old favourite, and who doesn't love a bit of buzz and woody. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This fabric is some more from <a href="https://llfabuk.com/">llfab </a>who recently ran this as part of their pre-order rounds. The fabric quality is amazing, its so nice to sew with. Its a very thick jersey but it gives the most amazing finish to these adorable little garments.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhxmmfhkb-KAaMCG-BIB0FbwYwAK_JmAzTCHoAmx8rP2hL4wUjL-AHrPQoAH8A7PAs0B8z_tzRo_dutDbCX66C5vOW5RArcxVhPCrCj7q03nvOymz4thpsFsX3pPJiBMFSp0e59txqjU1q/s1600/ts7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1218" data-original-width="1600" height="486" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhxmmfhkb-KAaMCG-BIB0FbwYwAK_JmAzTCHoAmx8rP2hL4wUjL-AHrPQoAH8A7PAs0B8z_tzRo_dutDbCX66C5vOW5RArcxVhPCrCj7q03nvOymz4thpsFsX3pPJiBMFSp0e59txqjU1q/s640/ts7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I bought the fabric to make Master Fox an adorable little tshirt to wear. The problem (is it a problem?) with making kids clothes is that you end up buying by the meter and you have so much fabric left over. Of course I am sure there are other things I can make with the rest of the fabric but how many Toy Story tshirts can one little boy have? So I decided to as well make one of his little girlfriends a matching dress as she is also a big fan of the films.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZOmEYeFcQ0a9_7Cmvp6-59f2HafmeItakDBaONBFCzfbpNZWrNy3AW2FhGRBzTHapO0dJCpy02xmYeH1MclE47pOp0lus7d-uRJ4l-15pVaIIG82HteddJuJcYH0W2YeeWfJ9_o9lBQCM/s1600/ts4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1213" data-original-width="1600" height="484" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZOmEYeFcQ0a9_7Cmvp6-59f2HafmeItakDBaONBFCzfbpNZWrNy3AW2FhGRBzTHapO0dJCpy02xmYeH1MclE47pOp0lus7d-uRJ4l-15pVaIIG82HteddJuJcYH0W2YeeWfJ9_o9lBQCM/s640/ts4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The patterns for these two outfits are both from the most recent <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Ottobredesign">Ottobre magazine</a> (Summer 3/2017). The tshirt is the whales and tigers top and the dress is a mash up of the Donuts and California Surfing dresses. Thankfully these two dresses were drawn on the same pattern pieces so they were easy to mix and match. I do love the versatility of Ottobre patterns, and the great thing about having their magazine subscription is that if I want to make something you can almost always guarentee you already have a pattern for it. Having said that the instructions are vague at best and come with very little visual instruction if any. This does make them quiet difficult to follow for a novice but as long as you read them carefully and follow the instructions they are fine to work with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidKlYG-7ItOXhxyZ6BrlSdRHdOA5VysGysNbhW9sdqYDeung65d8wSfwt2_BvuOIYqy43VvwNwGx-d5XY31VzNwtn7pko4UnqLR1k_l9Xtrq8I9EGi80imm8Dasgeoh1v52Zn0aYzuX8_h/s1600/ts5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidKlYG-7ItOXhxyZ6BrlSdRHdOA5VysGysNbhW9sdqYDeung65d8wSfwt2_BvuOIYqy43VvwNwGx-d5XY31VzNwtn7pko4UnqLR1k_l9Xtrq8I9EGi80imm8Dasgeoh1v52Zn0aYzuX8_h/s640/ts5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I am really impressed with my binding on both these outfits. They are sitting so perfectly flat. I think that can be partly contributed to by the fabric its attached to being of such a good sturdy quality but I have also done a lot of practicing with my twin needle and the threading/tension on my machine. I really do love to challenge myself with sewing now, and knit binding was a skill which was trying to evade me, but I think we are finally getting there.<br />
<br />
The binding fabric and green jersey came from <a href="http://www.caboodletextiles.co.uk/product-category/new-in/">caboodle textiles</a>, not a site I have used before but they have some lovely knits, these plain ones feel gorgeous. The knit binding was also from them. it doesn't feel to the touch like the best quality I have ever had but it certainly stitched up fine, I think the pictures prove that.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So which is your favourite disney movie, and if you could score the fabric what would you do with it? Also does anyone have any good ideas for what I could do with the last bit of this fabric? I don't have a massive amount but it would be enough to make another small child/baby outfit. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Ok, so I know of all the sewing I have been doing these aren't exactly the most practical or useful things but they are pretty damn cute!<br />
<br />
Will I actually put my baby in a headband? Am I that person? I don't know, but now I have the option to at least. I have a feeling that its just going to be more hassle than its worth to dress up a baby this much but I imagine they will go on for the odd posed photo ;)<br />
<br />
These actually mark the last thing on my list of sewing projects for when baby arrives. I know we definitely didn't need these, but a baby in a headband is adorable and it was a really great use of some leftover jersey from some of my other more recent makes. Plus who can deny the value of a what would be free accessory? What is nice about them as well is that at least a couple of them are made out of fabrics which I used to make other outfits for her so they will even match.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHul3h8TyFEU6QKS-aaK2hXzp0HTQHkc3pJhSFlPegm9H63Lp8bKfplsZJ9cDEuiz33EliVn-gH-ATiDOieF6pWT7m8lDRh2AuS2hncKvoQe_pQ29My6rvYiw0J4XtgZ56jZlqx7giBWC1/s1600/bh1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1318" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHul3h8TyFEU6QKS-aaK2hXzp0HTQHkc3pJhSFlPegm9H63Lp8bKfplsZJ9cDEuiz33EliVn-gH-ATiDOieF6pWT7m8lDRh2AuS2hncKvoQe_pQ29My6rvYiw0J4XtgZ56jZlqx7giBWC1/s640/bh1.JPG" width="526" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used a free online pattern from <a href="http://www.coralandco.com/blog/2015/12/knot-bow-headband-pattern-and-tutorial-easy-diy-headband-for-baby-and-toddler-2.html">Coral & Co</a> to make these. The pattern was a download but it was very minimal pages and included the pattern for both a thick and thin version as well as various sizes. Their website looks lovely and they have a fair few other free patterns, especially children's ones. There isn't much else to say about the pattern, it wasn't a difficult sew, but definitely a nice way to use up some leftover jersey you have, especially if you have already made a matching outfit and have some fabric spare.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Three of these fabrics are cotton jerseys and the plain pink one is a polyester jersey. The cotton ones have a lovely stiffness to them which helps to keep the bow in shape really well whereas the pink one is a little floppy and I feel might not be as practical on a little baby. Time will tell when I get to test it out practically.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Its lovely to have another use for those fabric scraps though. What is your favourite thing to do with fabric scraps? I'm terrible for not wanting to throw them away but also I really don't have the space to store them anymore. Its especially hard with having kids because every small piece could be a facing or a pocket lining for a tiny outfit! Argh! I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this plight though. </div>

<br />
But whats this you ask? That's right, boy sewing! I thought it about time I stopped neglecting the boy with all this girly sewing going on.<br />
<br />
These shorts actually serve a very specific purpose, they are his new 'potty training pants'. We have just started with this joyful phase of toddlerhood and what we learnt is that he likes to take his whole bottoms off before using the potty; yep naked from the waist down! This is perfectly fine when you are at home but when you are out and about and in a hurry you don't want to have to be taking those pesky shoes off just to get his trousers off. Thankfully its summer and so I went on the hunt for the perfect shorts pattern to help us with this dilemma.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjam5i-QJbq4JzAXK3DY6MjKerEk2cmK54N-Yh-anGthq5Oyp5vuyjBaaClcdWCTxNbc9BR38YiQXzvZmzSgnKnm2dzkVZqywFtSLbVJsvk_Oz6SYodJH5AGctSw-LWOtQGOjidYKZR4dZC/s1600/spsluminarium.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="702" data-original-width="1600" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjam5i-QJbq4JzAXK3DY6MjKerEk2cmK54N-Yh-anGthq5Oyp5vuyjBaaClcdWCTxNbc9BR38YiQXzvZmzSgnKnm2dzkVZqywFtSLbVJsvk_Oz6SYodJH5AGctSw-LWOtQGOjidYKZR4dZC/s640/spsluminarium.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
How adorable is this little man modelling his new shorts whilst running around an <a href="http://www.architects-of-air.com/luminaria.html">illuminarium</a>! Not the best visual representation I know but have you ever tried to keep a 2 year old boy still! At least you can see the fit on him.<br />
<br />
I was looking for something very specific when trying to find a pattern for his potty training shorts; a soft waistband for easy up and down action, no cuffs on the legs so they would go over his shoes whilst they are still on and preferably knee length. I was given a few suggestions but the pattern that came to my rescue was from <a href="https://brindilletwig.com/">Brindille and Twig</a> and its their <a href="https://brindilletwig.com/collections/bottoms/products/pocket-shorts-053">pockets shorts</a> pattern. It fit my above criteria perfectly, looked really easy to make and also seemed to fit some fabric which I already had in my stash of leftovers. I also love the fact it comes with pockets, its such a cute little addition and adds a nice bit of detail to make them more interesting.<br />
<br />
I've never made a pattern from this company before but not only is their website visually gorgeous they have so many basic jersey patterns for kids, there is definitely something for every occasion.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht8G1EQNeOztJB-VpSFc63fXti02lKgQflqbiJoANVT3Y_uAJQLWJ7Gt8L2tbiYuUUsEwUKZV9mkYzoa1Il0IN9QY9v-0SWn2MfTwnoaolwOTGEJW-qVPCUwmuTonWxyIVkYowTCpr0P52/s1600/DSCF2264.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht8G1EQNeOztJB-VpSFc63fXti02lKgQflqbiJoANVT3Y_uAJQLWJ7Gt8L2tbiYuUUsEwUKZV9mkYzoa1Il0IN9QY9v-0SWn2MfTwnoaolwOTGEJW-qVPCUwmuTonWxyIVkYowTCpr0P52/s640/DSCF2264.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
The pattern was a PDF download as you would expect these days, but it was so simple I only needed 5 pieces of paper. The construction was also simple enough and the pattern came with really helpful instructions that included very helpful images. In fact I don't think I actually read any of the text when constructing these shorts I just following the photos. That is my idea of a perfect pattern.<br />
<br />
I made two versions as you can see; the blue pair are some leftover single jersey from myfabrics.com with blue rib for the waistband and some leftover black jersey for the pockets. The second pair are made using a more sturdy grey and black sweatshirt knit which I got from the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Ottobredesign">Ottobre Etsy shop</a>, some black ribbing for the waistband and the same black jersey for the pockets again. The pattern worked perfectly for both types of fabric but I definitely like the black and grey pair better. I think that's just because I love boy shorts in sweatshirt fabric, they are more like joggers and this fabric just handled really nicely and they have such a professional finish.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgij4hVoEfkID6u-pZDF-NR43t_pb_CWwyZu7mm2KXbaAljtDpPkZtezkMMBAVow-LS7HkPBKpk8bAw07r-1P-evxkE32uDtPymEsFxDgmyQZ4Eh57OQhazNkVarJzJsXv-KTGr2epfnfoh/s1600/DSCF2259.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgij4hVoEfkID6u-pZDF-NR43t_pb_CWwyZu7mm2KXbaAljtDpPkZtezkMMBAVow-LS7HkPBKpk8bAw07r-1P-evxkE32uDtPymEsFxDgmyQZ4Eh57OQhazNkVarJzJsXv-KTGr2epfnfoh/s640/DSCF2259.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I made these shorts in a size 90cm (18-24 months) and they fit him perfectly, and I mean perfectly. I did sew the waistband a tiny it shorter as I know he has a little waist but otherwise its spot on. This was a little surprising as most of his stuff in this size is still a little big but I am not going to complain, its summer, they fit and he needs them for now not in 2 months time.<br />
<br />
So all in all I love this pattern, I recommend it and this will definitely not be the last Brindille and Twig pattern I make for my little monkeys! They only question is which of their gorgeous patterns next, and will it be for a boy or a girl?<br />
<br />

Who can resist something so perrrrrfect? I mean its a tiny dress with colourful jolly cats on it!<br />
<br />
I was inspired to make this dress by one that I saw in John Lewis. It really was a beautiful dress but I just looked at it, and I looked at the price label and I just thought meh, I can do that. So the search for the perfectly cute kitty fabric commenced and I came across these cats in cotton by Dashwood studio.<br />

This pattern is so classic and yet modern for little girls. The shape is pretty timeless with the high waistline and gathered skirt but the square neckline make it feel much more modern and interesting.<br />
<br />
The sew itself was very straightforward. As usual the instructions from Puperita were clear, with good photo's to help you along the way. The facing on this dress was probably my favourite bit, it was just so satisfying. After I stitched it it lay so perfectly with the top pattern it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The sleeves were a bit fiddly, but they went in easy enough and the rest of it was easy as. I managed to sew the whole thing together (with all the associated ironing, god I hate the ironing!) in one short evening.<br />

<br />
I love the little bow on the front, its such a cute little detail. I did think about adding some piping to the waistline but I didn't want to risk ruining it so I missed it off this version. I definitely would consider adding it if I make another, it would help draw attention to the waist detail. This is such a lovely pattern for woven fabrics. The gathered skirt design means that it copes well with a more structured cotton like this. It is also easy to pair with a long sleeved top or cardi for the colder months.<br />
<br />
I made this in size 0-3 months, its so dainty! I hope Miss Fox will be able to get some wear out of it before she is crawling around.<br />

So, which are your favourite cats? I think for me it has to be the pink and yellow one, mostly because of the colours. It needs to be more common for adults to wear clothes like this!<br />

I'm pretty sure a few posts ago when I did some baby sewing I talked about how I NEVER sew in florals for myself because I just never ever wear them. What happened?<br />
<br />
The print is very 'twee' and feels a bit Cath Kidson to me, what with the colour and the flowers and I honestly can't tell you whats drawn me to this fabric. Maybe its my inner 'mummy' but whatever it is I actually really like it.<br />

<br />
There isn't really much to say about this sew, it is another New Look 6216 in size 10. The last two I made just seemed to feel really nice when I tried them on over my bump so I figured I could fit another one into my wardrobe for after baby arrives. This pattern is just so easy to sew and the results look stunning, it could definitely be store bought. I really liked the additional sleeve option out of the two I made last time so I used it again on this version.<br />
<br />
Both fabrics are from a local fabric shop in Derby called 'Elegance'. I don't tend to go in very often but I definitely should more, they have some lovely bits in there and the staff are so nice.<br />
<br />
This jersey is a little thicker than the stuff I used to make the other versions in my previous post but the top still hangs really well and this jersey handled perfectly.<br />

<br />
I'll tell you what though, I'm bored of blogging about things which I can't actually show you being modeled, everything looks so flat. It's also hard to write about the fit etc of a pattern when you can't actually wear it. That being said I can't wait to start sharing them later on. Watch this space.<br />
<br />
Do you ever sew with fabrics out of your comfort zone in terms of colour/print? How did you find it, were they worn or did they just end up in the back of the drawer never to see the light of day again? Hopefully this won't be the case here as I do really like this fabric but only time will tell whether I actually managed to add a floral print to my wardrobe.<br />
